To the person/s who borrowed/stole our barbeque last evening, we hope it serves you as well and as faithfully as it has served our organization and the communit...y events we used it to support. Perhaps you could even return it once you're done. Since that is not likely, we wanted to pass along a few tips we learned to help you prepare the delicious meals we have over the last few years. 1. Stay away from cooking hamburgers. The grease will be on you and everything else within a 30' radius, and it is unbelievably smokey. The kids at sporting events love hamburgers, and you will get conned into making them more than you realize. 2. Start the box with a fair amount of charcoal, then switch to wood but not too much it burns really hot. Four to five sticks of a nice oak will work for a very long time. 3. It would help if you also got a heavy-duty apron; otherwise, your belly is part of the cooking. No matter how long the utensil's handle you're using, the apron will make your day a lot better. 4. The firebox grates need to be flipped each use; they tend to warp if you have a long cook. 5. Pull any meat from the grill a few degrees before thoroughly cooked, and place in a foil-lined ice chest. They will finish cooking there while waiting to serve. 6. Don't raise the grates past the height. Once everything heats up, no amount of force nor obscenity will allow you to lower them if raised too high. 7. After a good cooking session, you will have an unbelievable amount of hot ash. Don't even try to drive anywhere; otherwise, you'll cast hot embers everywhere. You may be able to locate some plates to borrow on your late-night excursions; these would help. We also don't want to find you because of a fire you started. 8. The grill loves to be clean and shiny, which was probably part of the allure when you decided to borrow it. Smart and Final has an excellent stainless steel cleaner that will help you keep it shiny and easier to clean between uses. 9. This is the most important note. If you do, clean it, and we hope you do. DO NOT clean it in your driveway at home. No matter how hard you try, the ash ends up on all of your and your neighbor's cars. The grease ends up being bicycle tracks or tiny shoe prints in every neighbor's driveway; their parents appreciate it. Finally, the registration expires in 2022; make sure you get over to the DMV and get it updated, and we hope our little barbeque brings you as many good memories as it has us. To anyone who has seen our barbecue today around town or perhaps stashed in someone's back yard, please give the Kern County Sheriffs Department a call @661-861-3110.
