The 2020-21 MSA Board endorses Proposition 16 (Opportunity for All), a proposition on the November California ballot which undo the harms done by the ban on affirmative action introduced by Proposition 209 (1996). Join us tomorrow, October 8 with CAIR - San Francisco Bay Area and two of our community members for 2020 Election: A Deep Dive on Prop 16 (Opportunity for All) to learn more about this proposition to repeal the ban on affirmative action. FULL TEXT:... In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful UC Berkeley MSA Statement in Support of Proposition 16 The 2020-21 Board of UC Berkeley Muslim Student Association endorses Proposition 16, a ballot measure which, if approved by California voters, would repeal Section 31 of Article I of the California State Constitution. This would undo the harms done by the ban on affirmative action introduced by Proposition 209 (1996), which drastically affected access to state education, employment, and business contracts for women, people of color, and minority-owned businesses across California. Proposition 16 would positively affect the Muslim community in California and on our campus in numerous ways. Firstly, it would make higher education more accessible for the established Black Muslim community in California, as well as the fast-growing Latinx and Indigenous Muslim populations, for whom institutional racism makes access to higher education difficult. Affirmative action also benefits Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African ethnicities that are underrepresented on campus and in our community. Furthermore, Proposition 16 would enable more Muslim-owned businesses to receive valuable state contracts, and enable the consideration of race, ethnicity, and gender in public employment in order to correct for California’s long-standing historical discrimination and inequities. Proposition 16 will go out to California voters as part of the upcoming ballot due November 3. In the meantime, we encourage our community members to mobilize their communities towards a ‘YES’ vote in November. To learn more, you can join MSA and CAIR at our Proposition 16 webinar coming up on October 8, and take action with MEMSSA and the ASUC at the ‘Yes on Prop 16’ Text Banking event on October 11. We applaud and support the hard work of community organizers and activists across Californiamany of whom are a part of our communitywho have worked tirelessly to make Proposition 16 a reality. In solidarity, UC Berkeley Muslim Student Association Board 2020-2021
