Martin E. Lewis It is with great sadness that we recently learned Martin E. Lewis passed over the final bar earlier this year. He was 98 years old. For sixteen years, Mr. Lewis served as a faculty member in the Engine Department retiring from Cal Maritime in 1994. Born in Cincinnati, and raised in San Diego, CA he attended the University of Southern California (USC) on an NROTC scholarship. After graduating from USC, Mr. Lewis served in the U.S. Navy as a seagoing sailor unti...l retiring in 1974 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Mr. Lewis received a master’s degree in management and science from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1970. In addition to teaching at Cal Maritime, he also taught marine engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and Maine Maritime Academy. We wish Mr. Lewis fair winds and following seas. Photo credit: Napa Valley Register

Share in the comments a pic of the last ship that you worked or sailed on. Tugs are ok too. No barges (just kidding).

THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCE A ship engine failed. No one could fix it. Then they brought in a man with 40 years on the job. He inspected the engine carefully, top to bottom. After looking things over, the guy reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. The engine was fixed! Seven days later, the owners got his bill for $10,000. What?! the owners said. You hardly did anything. Send us an itemized bill".... The reply simply said: Ball-Peen Hammer: $2 Knowing where to tap: $9,998 Don’t Ever Underestimate Experience. Author: Unknown

Apparently, if you hold onto your Hawsepipe yearbooks long enough, they become very valuable. https://www.ebay.com//1962-CALIFORNIA-MARITIM/111457490565
