Great news for California consumers and employers -- Proposition 15 has been defeated! Voters understood the negative impact the tax hike would have had on this state, and said NO! Thank you to everyone who voted to protect Proposition 13 by rejecting the massive Prop 15 property tax increase.

Employer is taking firm to Texas, and taxes are "the major factor." California's top personal income tax rate is 13.3%. The income tax rate in Texas is 0%. "I could either put that money toward things that are fixing the world or give it to the California state government."

CalTax recommends YES on Proposition 22. This measure will empower rideshare drivers, increase state revenue, improve investment returns for the state, and improve California’s business climate.

CalTax recommends NO on Proposition 15. This property tax increase -- the largest property tax increase in California history -- would hurt small businesses, cause job losses and increase California families' costs for food and other purchases.

Something to ponder as you consider whether to vote for tax increases: State auditor finds "wasteful and improper personnel decisions, improper contracting, conflict of interest, misuse of state resources, and dishonesty." Dept. of Education: Four seniorlevel managers and a former executive worked together to hire a preselected person for a permanent management position, without the required interview process, and improperly approved a high salary. Dept. of State Hospitals:... Improperly allowed its "telepsychiatrists" to receive enhanced retirement benefits intended for those exposed to a risk of physical injury. "Will result in millions of dollars in overpaid retirement benefits if left uncorrected." Dept. of Industrial Relations: Unlawfully preselected a candidate for a management position before others submitted applications. Provided a higher salary even though the candidate didn't meet the requirements, resulting in about $41,000 in overpayments. CalTax's Ben Lee explains why San Francisco voters should vote NO on the flawed local tax proposals Propositions F and L. Prop F proposes an inequitable tax based not on how much profit a business makes, but simply on how much money initially came in the door without considering how much was spent to pay employees, purchase items for resale, pay rent and property taxes, etc. Prop L ostensibly targets corporations with overpaid executives, but would hurt the working class t...he most. This measure also raises privacy concerns for anyone who works for a San Francisco-based business. https://www.sfchronicle.com//Two-S-F-tax-measures-would-hu

We don't need a massive property tax increase in California --property tax revenue has been growing steadily for years, generating more and more money for schools and local government. A report released today by the Los Angeles County assessor describes the significant growth of property tax revenue in California's largest county: "The total net Assessment Roll has almost doubled since 2012," and increased 5.97% from 2019 to 2020. This translates to more property tax dollars ...schools and local government, even as Prop 13 protects individual property owners from unmanageable annual increases. There is absolutely no need to increase property taxes or repeal any of the protections of Prop 13! https://assessor.lacounty.gov/reports/

This year, California politicians tried to raise taxes and fees by more than $82.8 billion. These lawmakers attempted to tax groceries, clothing, electricity, medical research, car tires, and the Internet. There was even a proposal to continue taxing people when they move out of the state! In the midst of a global pandemic, higher taxes couldn’t come at a worse possible time. That’s why we're asking you to join us to help stop higher taxes! https://www.caltax.org//20201005-Join-Us-to-Help-Stop-High

With 2.5 million Californians unemployed, many families across this state do not know when they will receive their next paycheck. For those who are still working, salary cuts are a very real possibility. With so much uncertainty and so many families struggling, now is the worst possible time to raise taxes. But that hasn’t stopped lawmakers in Sacramento from proposing $82.8 billion in new taxes and fees, and special interests are trying to effectively gut Proposition 13 with a massive $11.5 billion commercial and industrial property tax increase. City councils, county supervisors and other local politicians are also asking voters to approve 243 local tax increases (and two reductions) in the November election, after 95 tax increases already were approved earlier this year. https://calmatters.org//this-is-not-the-time-to-propose-m/

Amid the COVID-19 shutdown that resulted in thousands of California businesses closing and sent millions of people to the unemployment line, state lawmakers considered raising taxes and fees more than $82.8 billion a year, according to new research from the California Tax Foundation. Just when Californians thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse, the Legislature taxed struggling businesses and researchers seeking to develop a cure for COVID-19 and introduced proposals to increase the cost of living in every corner of the state, CalTax President Robert Gutierrez said. Lawmakers even proposed a tax on companies that rehire workers and a tax that would increase utility costs for Californians stuck at home during the pandemic. https://www.caltax.org//re/20201001-Tax-and-Fee-Report.pdf

The California Taxpayers Association Board of Directors voted Friday to support Proposition 22, the initiative that would increase state revenue by allowing app-based drivers to work as independent contractors as long as several conditions are met. The board also voted to oppose Proposition 14, a flawed bond that would increase state debt during a recession. By approving Proposition 22, voters will protect app-based drivers’ independence to choose when, where and how long to... work, enabling hundreds of thousands of drivers to supplement lost income and wages, CalTax President Robert Gutierrez said. Prop 22 provides more transportation and delivery options for consumers while at the same time improving California’s economy. During this historic recession, it is more important than ever that voters focus on protecting jobs and rebuilding the economy. CalTax, the state’s largest and oldest association representing taxpayers, noted that Proposition 22 has the potential to increase state tax revenue, improve California’s business climate, reduce the state’s budget deficit and reduce pressure to increase taxes on other taxpayers. https://www.caltax.org//20200928-CalTax-Supports-Propositi
