During this time of high stress and fragmentation, The Conscious Dancer which takes place on Saturdays from 10:00-11:15 a.m. will be open to all of the dance school on a drop in basis for the remainder of the semester. It is a guided class that uses fairly minimal screen time to facilitate rest, movement, meditative, and somatic-based experiences as a means for building a grounding practice that connects one to self and the present. If you would like to join, please email [email protected] by the Friday evening before you're thinking of taking class for the zoom link. #calarts #calartsdance

Premiere of a brand new work by CalArts faculty members @spensermyles and @jamsvy on @ladanceproject!! Get your tickets today! Link in their bio. Photography by the wonderful @joshrose Repost from @spensermyles @jamsvy and I are thrilled to share our new work, THE BETWEENS, for @ladanceproject 's Drive-In Dances series starting September 17th. This work was made in collaboration with the performers (@ymsorzano , @nomievb , @2marsnback , and @david_adrian ) and composer @ma...xwell_transue with costumes by @69us . We're HONORED to join forces with such amazing artists and can't wait to (responsibly and safely) share this work with you! Ticket link in bio, and more about THE BETWEENS below. This project began as an investigation of the possibilities for performance, in both body and site, during the Covid era. As our conversation around this deepened, the words placement, replacement, and displacement became increasingly present. There’s an inherent relationship between these words, and it’s liminal and ever-changing slipping in and out of, adapting to, and accommodating different states of being. This liminality has been at the heart of our process, and itlead us to this central question: How do you maintain a sense of self when you’re constantly placed, replaced, and displaced? Through this process, we aim to explore, perform, and reframe this question as a representation of this never-ending reorientation of self and site. #calarts #calartsdance #ladp #ladanceproject #joshrose #spensertheberge #jermainespivey

CalArts faculty member Brigette Dunn-Korpela is a 2020-2021 CultureHub Resident Artist! Congratulations, Brigette! Read about her incredible career and what she plans to create throughout the residency below: Brigette Dunn is a choreographer, artist, educator and the Artistic Director/Founder for B. Dunn Movement. Her work is informed by ritual, intuition and traditions rooted in African-diaspora cultures and embodied narratives of race, masked identity, systemic legacies of ...erasure, colonization and commodification of black and brown bodies. Brigette creates visceral and multi sensory performance experiences that challenge legacies of cultural biases and norms of hegemony. Her choreography has appeared at KCRep ("For Colored Girls), The Geffen Contemporary @MOCA, REDCAT, Aratani Theatre, Bootleg Theater, Multicultural Arts Center Cambridge, and Mobius. Brigette currently serves on the dance faculty at CalArts, where she also received her MFA in choreography. ECHO: Immersive Experience is a collection of modular vignettes that weave together the narrative of the kidnapping and enslavement of tens of millions of African bodies during the TransAtlantic Slave Trade. During the residency, EIE will be developed into an immersive experience with live performance combined with AR/VR technologies. EIE unpacks legacies of cultural trauma and gives context to modern experiences of race and how the violence of history has echoed through time. It is a story of survival, told eloquently and with reverence by those whose ancestors survived the journey. BRIGETTE DUNN-KORPELA

We’d like to invite you to our Summer 2020 Dance Intensive. As we continue to navigate the current health and safety guidelines due to the Covid19 Pandemic, we will be offering this summer intensive as an online, remote experience. This workshop is open to incoming and current CalArts dance students and is free of charge! This week-long intensive will be held Monday, August 17th - Friday, August 21st, 10am-3pm PST, daily. ... REGISTRATION LINK IN BIO. Reserve your spot today. Space is limited We’d like to introduce you to our final faculty member: Jermaine Spivey! Jermaine Spivey will explore defining Technique as a progressive understanding of coordination, paired with but not exclusively governed by form. If you can make informed observations about why and how your body functions, then you can develop articulate responses with greater clarity and detail. From a choreographic standpoint, I would like to use our time together to begin framing this ‘technique' into compositional structures centered around language and its faculty for framing perspective and interpretation. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Jermaine Maurice Spivey is an educator, choreographer and an award winning performer working in the field of Dance since 2002. He has spent the bulk of his career traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe teaching workshops, performing and staging works by artists such as Crystal Pite, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hofesh Shecter, William Forsythe and Swedish singer, songwriter and producer Robyn. His most recent choreographic commission, Terms And Conditions (2019), was premiered by Rambert 2 at Sadler’s Wells in London, UK. Jermaine has also created and performed two evening length works with ongoing collaborator and partner Spenser Theberge entitled, Rather This Then (2017) and Position 3 (2018), the later co-created and performed with filmmaker John De Menil, with support and co-production from Navel LA and CalArts Dance. #calarts #calartsdance #calartssummer #jermainespivey
