Who’s got two paws and is excited for a big week of water quality protection? ...this guy!

Tiny microfiber strands made of plastic have washed into the ocean from laundering our clothes and are polluting one of the most remote regions on Earth: the Arctic. Despite being a very remote region, the Arctic is intimately linked to our homes and our shopping habits. With every load of laundry, thousands of tiny synthetic fibers can enter our rivers, waterways, and ultimately reach the ocean. This is why #CAWaterkeepers are backing legislation this session to stop micro...plastic pollution from reaching the ocean, and to keep our waters safe to swim, drink, and fish. Poseidon Water's ocean desalination project "is a classic case of environmental injustice: a reverse Robin Hood where the project would steal from the poor to give to the rich." The project will hurt both California taxpayers and the environment. - this is why we say #NOPoseidon. #FueraPoseidon More from the Sacramento Bee: https://www.sacbee.com//california-f/article248008940.html.

BREAKING: California Governor Newsom ousts a key Regional Water Board member ahead of Board's vote on Poseidon's ocean desalination project. How far is the governor willing to go to tip the scales in favor of the [desalination] project? said Executive Director Sean Bothwell. Is he really going to go against the local residents and the environmental justice advocates’ concerns? Member von Blasingame was the most vocal critic of Poseidon’s expensive, fossil fuel-dependent,... and unnecessary project and Governor Newsom silenced him! Von Blasingame’s removal is just the last effort by this Administration to pack the court with Pro-Poseidon Regional Board votes. If the project was wanted by the community, these types of political maneuvers would not be necessary. BREAKING: California Governor Newsom signed a new Executive Order setting a statewide goal to conserve 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030. A highlight of the Executive Order are key actions California can take now to address climate change, and importantly, advance the Ocean Protection Council’s no-regrets strategy to protect California’s coast & ocean. #CAWaterkeepers will continue to work with key state agencies to make these actions a reality. Even with some of strongest water quality laws in the nation, many of California’s waterways remain polluted - in large part due to inconsistent and incomplete enforcement of California's bedrock environmental laws. #CAWaterkeepers have outlined the actions California needs to take for #CleanWAterCA. Because stopping and preventing pollution from happening in the first place is needed to achieve drinkable, swimmable, & fishable water: https://bit.ly/3icjAoQ.

#Poseidon’s Huntington Beach #desalination plant will poison our climate, marine life, and aquifers. @cagovernor @gavinnewsom, Poseidon’s project is a bad deal for California. #CAClimateLeadersDontDesal #NoPoseidon

It’s #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek! Sea otters are not only cute, curious and down-right adorable - they are key for a healthy ocean. These ocean ‘engineers’ munch on sea urchins & help our kelp forests flourish. Unfortunately, climate change and ongoing pollution threaten our kelp forests, our sea otters, and our ocean. #CAWaterkeepers are working to protect important sea life and the ocean they call home now and for generations to come. California has some of the toughest water quality laws in the nation. But without sufficient agency staff to enforce these laws, they're only words on a page. Leaving gaps in Water Board staffing will give polluters a pass placing the health of our communities & the water we depend on to drink, swim, and fish at risk and is not the solution we need during the pandemic. Read more about the need to protect #CleanWaterCA: https://cacoastkeeper.org/water-boards-dont-give-polluters/.

MAJOR VICTORY for the Ventura River! After multiple years, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper has reached a new agreement with City of Ventura to protect the Ventura River from over-pumping and to make sure the City leaves a meaningful amount of water behind to keep the river flowing. Prior to Channelkeeper's intervention, nothing prevented the City and others from taking every last drop from the river. Now, the river will keep flowing while a long-term watershed-wide solution is finalized and in place. Visit here to read more: https://www.sbck.org/media/press-releases/.

NEW REPORT: #CAWaterkeepers released 10 Principles for Healthy & Climate-Resilient Waterways TODAY! These Principles take the Governor Newsom’s recent Water Resilience Portfolio one step further by detailing explicit actions California can take for a resilient water future. Climate change will threaten our waterways regardless of even the most ambitious efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Some threats are irreversible, which means we need to double our efforts to minimize the impacts within our control." - California Coastkeeper Alliance Executive Director, Sean Bothwell. VICTORY: Los Angeles Waterkeeper prevails in HISTORIC wastewater recycling lawsuit! By ruling that dumping billions of wastewater uselessly into the sea is in fact a waste, this is a precedent-setting victory for LA, for the entire state of California, and for a resilient water future. California's environment, ratepayers, and economy will all benefit from this decision as the state improves local water supply resiliency and sustainability through water recycling. In LA alo...ne, this can provide 1/3 of the region's water supply! Learn more about this historic court victory here: https://lawaterkeeper.org/a-constitutional-victory-and-a-/.

The Water Board once again denied granting Poseidon the approval they need to intake 106 million gallons of water per day because they refuse to do enough to mitigate their marine life impacts. We continue our fight to protect our ocean and coast from unnecessary desalination projects.

TOMORROW the Santa Ana Regional Water Board will deliberate Poseidon's costly, harmful ocean desalination project. Following last week's online hearings, Poseidon’s Huntington Beach desalination plant is in choppy waters as Board Members question whether Orange County even needs the $1 BILLION project that will decimate ocean life and inevitably double water rates for local residents. "Household water bills are bound to rise more than district estimates of $3 to $6 a month, i...mpacting working class families and small businesses." https://www.latimes.com//poseidons-huntington-beach-desali. #SayNOtoPoseidon #FueraPoseidon #NOPoseidon Orange County Coastkeeper
