Along with Thanksgiving looking a little different in 2020, so has attendance at our museum, but you can still visit our virtual museum. I’d like to highlight the exhibition Against All Odds. It was created in collaboration with a local Native Californian family who have been able to restore and continue their cultural traditions. https://www.csueastbay.edu//v/native-california/index.html
I was sad to learn that a very special person to the Anthropology Museum and Department is no longer with us. Dorothy Dottie Mae McElhiney passed away on August 25, 2020. As the department secretary, she ran the department in the 70s when the museum was founded, and was enlisted as the first assistant director to the museum. She was such a wonderful woman; she will be missed by many. Rest in Peace Dottie.

Museums only rate a 3 out of 10 for riskiness - "...often have larger spaces and higher ceilings, which helps lower the risk."
Enjoying this interesting book about anthropology's origins. While anthropology has been around for over 100 years, there's still a lot it can teach us. From the article: "Boas and his circle confronted a bigotry that was scientifically endorsed at the time, and they dismantled it by showing it wasn’t scientific at all;" https://www.nytimes.com//review-gods-of-upper-air-charles-

Ruth Orta, a Jalquin/Saclan/Ohlone/Bay Miwok native of the Bay Area was a big part of our Against All Odds exhibit in 2017, which featured her family's story. The Oakland Museum also featured her and her descendants in this video about the importance of Oaks to the native people of California. You can learn more about her story in our Virtual Galleries here: https://www.csueastbay.edu//v/native-california/index.html Please stay safe & enjoy! Here's one way to enjoy the museum world from home! And it will even give you something to talk about during Zoom socials. Stay safe everyone!
We should get something like this going! I wonder how busy our University police are??
Unsurprisingly we have postponed the opening of our spring exhibition, but please enjoy our past exhibits at https://www.csueastbay.edu/museum/ Be sure to wash those hands and stay healthy!
It's that time again -
Always a great event - Hope you can make it!
Do you know where to find the largest pyramid in the world ? I missed this one in a trivia contest, so I thought I’d share. http://www.bbc.com//20160812-the-giant-pyramid-hidden-insi
