Burn Institute 01.03.2021

Our Circle of Friends support group for burn survivors and caregivers continues to meet virtually twice a month to share their triumphs and challenges of living with their injuries. Physical and emotional healing continues after a burn survivor receives treatment, and this empowering program helps new and longtime survivors create a community of support and sharing around their journeys. We now also offer a women's support group that meets on the third Thursday of the month. If you are a burn survivor interested in joining our Circle of Friends, you can find more information on our website: https://burninstitute.org/ev/burn-survivor-support-group-3/

Home security bars are a method to keep your family safe. It’s important to know that the fire code requires the bars have an interior safety release mechanism... to allow escape in case of a fire or other emergency. Take a look at this video for more details. And for many more valuable safety tips, visit sandiego.gov/fire #FireSafetyTips Capt. M. Doan See more

Author Stephanie Kahle wrote this sweet and informative book when her firefighter husband was deployed on a strike team to combat wildfires in California. With beautiful illustrations from Karen Riedler and Kahle’s great vision, My Daddy Slays Dragons is a great family read for everyone and especially families with a parent occasionally away for an extended period doing important work like fighting fires. 10% of the proceeds from this book go to the Burn Institute to help us... continue our mission to education and inspire our communities to prevent burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma. While families may have to get a little more creative this year to celebrate Halloween, we want to make sure everyone can still have a fire-safe and fun day. Here is our Halloween tip of the day: Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks in your Jack-o-lantern For more information on how to be safe during Halloween, check out the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) - https://www.nfpa.org//Fire-/Seasonal-fire-causes/Halloween

On Friday the Burn Institute hosted 9 volunteers from councilmember Chris J Cate's office, (including Chris Cate!) for training and installation of smoke alarms in homes of seniors. After the training, the volunteers went out and installed alarms in 8 homes in the Sixth District, ensuring that 23 people are better prepared in case of a home fire. Social distancing and safety precautions were in place to keep the volunteers and seniors safe. Thank you so much to our volunteers for helping the Burn Institute uphold its mission to provide education and resources for fire prevention to San Diego county. If you are a senior 62+, who owns your own home in the country, go this link to fill out an application to have smoke alarms installed in your home - https://burninstitute.org/applicat/smoke-alarm-application/

Each year at the beginning of October, the nation observes Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Make sure to follow San Diego Fire-Rescue Department for streaming events and watch a live burn and fire safety demonstration this Saturday, October 10th. By the way, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow did not start the fire by kicking over the lantern in the barn, but the historical incident did lead to much greater fire prevention and modernized firefighting efforts. The Burn Institute acknowledges this annual observance and encourages you to adopt fire and burn precautions every day of the year.

Fire Prevention Week 2020 begins on Oct. 4. Because of the pandemic, SD Fire-Rescue will present three virtual events via Facebook Live. The first event is sche...duled for Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 8 a.m. You will get a virtual tour of SDFD fire station 45 in Mission Valley. The second Facebook Live is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8 a.m. This event will be broadcast entirely in Spanish from SDFD station 29 in San Ysidro. Both of these broadcasts will present a snapshot of what firefighters do during their 24 hour shifts and provide a general orientation of the apparatus and station house. And, of course, you will meet the crews at these stations. The final event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10 starting at 9 a.m. This will be a fire and burn safety broadcast which will include our partners at the Burn Institute and AMR and a live burn demonstration which illustrates this year's FPW theme - Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.
