Horse stance is crucial to develop good strong kung fu. It is an important posture in Asian martial arts and takes its name from the position assumed when riding a horse. The obvious benefit from stance training is to improve leg strength and endurance. The hidden benefit is in teaching your body to align itself and "root." This is something that comes from holding a stance for long periods of time, past the point of fatigue, and it only comes if you train correctly. It is the first step to developing root.
