Moving forward on our larger developments I'm thrilled to think about creating the common spaces residents will interact with everyday, whether that be a community garden, patio, lobby, mail room, ground level coffee shop! The importance of these areas are really hit on in this article. Ill leave this quote and a brief explanation on how these areas can be critical to creating a community in an urban area. "Creating good multifamily housing is about more than just providing ...a place for people to live and sleep. It’s about maximizing human connections. If residents form bonds with each other, it strengthens their ties to the place and to the surrounding community. It extends their idea of home beyond their own front door and inspires them to care for the building and look out for their neighbors." https://www.multihousingnews.com//3-strategies-for-effect/

We’ve all seen sidewalks with huge cracks in them. Imagine that same effect in your foundation or sidingnot a pretty picture. A group of researchers in the Netherlands are developing what they call Self-Healing Concrete. The concrete is infused with bacterial spores that patch up cracks as water seeps through. This new material will improve durability and constructability while lowering costs. 18-hour cities like Austin, Portland, and Oakland are primed for huge growth in 2016 from a real estate development stand-point. Studies show these cities benefit from lower costs of living, the increasing ease of staying connected to main hubs, more affordable and available investment opportunities, and increasing sophistication from realtors and investors. BuildZig is excited to be working on a transit-oriented development project in Oakland’s Longfellow neighborhood. Stay tuned!
