The end of the school year is here, even though it may feel as though it already ended earlier in some ways. Similarly, at the end of every day, we can see stars and the moon in the sky. There are many myths about a man in the moon, partially due to the way the moon’s craters have formed. Using your imagination, if there really were a man in the moon, what do you think he’d want to say? You can write a short story imagining how he got there and whether he would want to come b...ack down to earth. Comment: What’s your favorite planet? What do you think is going on on the moon? It's Writing Wednesday and time for another prompt to get you thinking about the future! What do you want to be when you grow up? Maybe a singer, an engineer, a teacher, or even something that hasn’t been invented yet? Imagine what your day would be like and write a story about it. You could even turn it into a picture book!... Happy Mentor Monday! Let's celebrate Angelique, one of our wonderful mentors at Malcolm X Elementary. Angelique Jimenez is a third year Psychology Major with an emphasis in child development. Born and raised in East Los Angeles, she loves to take a more active role in combating injustices against human rights. She is the Social Media Director for the Conscious Coffee project, in charge of informing the community about the link between ethical sourcing and labor trafficking. ...Angelique is also the Vice President for the Anti-Trafficking Coalition at Berkeley, a student led coalition that focuses on working within the community to bring awareness of the growing rate of human trafficking. She got involved in BUILD to help younger students with not only their literacy skills, but to also strengthen their love for learning. Her favorite part about being in BUILD is being able to form friendships with her scholars and discuss the greatness of Dog Man. Some advice she gives to those learning to read is to make sure you open yourself up to the captivating world of the book and just have fun!

She got involved with BUILD because she was looking for a way to contribute positive change in her new community and wanted to be a part of a public service oriented program at Cal. Her favorite part about BUILD is her scholars! They make her laugh, give her joy, and make her proud. Her scholars and their growth in their reading has really inspired her. Izzy is grateful that BUILD has further developed her leadership skills and has become an important part of her Cal experience and her first year as a transfer.
