We haven't finished grieving George. We didn't even start Breonna. We are tired and angry all over again. Not sure what's more painful; seeing how much all your lives, and post just keep on going w/o interruption or knowing George was most folx one and done. Your silence is deafening. Your knees are still on our backs.

We've been away from social media, healing our spirits & connecting w/the outdoors as preCovid planned all summer. We climbed through a successful summer in middle of a health pandemic, racial inequality/awakening (esp in industry) and protests, an economic catastrophe and now the fires. 8 weeks of back to back camps, held w/intentional community safety and small group enrollment provided exactly the perfect Rx this unconventional summer for our most marginalized population i...n outdoor adventure. With our newly team owned van, Harriet, we ventured freely, independent, and happy from Tiburon to Tahoe, camping, climbing, swimming, kayaking & SUP, laughing, terrified by raccoons and connecting w/selves & nature! 1k photos later and help of my 10yr old, this is one of two movies showcasing the highlights of our adventures. Thank you EVERYONE who made this possible investing your $$, time, energy, love & support into our vision in closing the adventure gap for Black and Brown girls. We have grown to 4 teams and 20 girls joining the program this fall and we are looking forward to more adventures with our crew! More to come.... Brown Girls Climbing 25.09.2020

After a timid slow start, followed by an oncoming thunderstorm chase, the girls felt they didn't put in enough rope climbing Wednesday, opting to forego the hike & part of rest day Thursday to give it another try. Successful move all-around! Milo & Lennon learned how to crack climb, sticking their little fingers & toes in a thin line to complete a 5.9 slabby short route and scaled their first long line exposed easily. Lennon is hungry for the wall & could have stayed climbin...g all day. Milo surprised herself pushing through harder moves to finish the slab (you can see it in her smile). The power voices coming from Marlo & Jeanine gave them their first comfortable start & trusting relationship w/the rope, belayer and system. These two laid a valuable foundation to success for themselves simply focused on learning how to overcome the fear of climbing, letting go, sitting back and pushing away from the wall over and over until their voices soared confidently to make the next move naturally. The process for girls of color to open safely on the wall in body confidence is different, requiring a unique approach, rich w/cultural relevance connection & motivation from mentors, guides, leaders that look like them & can relate to their experiences as BIPOC girls in the world. The typical one off climbing experience model outfitters/gyms try for BIPOC kids just doesn't/hasn't worked and no one stopped to explore why in 30yrs. Training, hiring, opening doors for more BIPOC instructors is truly the best investment any company can do AFTER attuning, dismantling their racism and labor to educate themselves on creating safe spaces for employees & BIPOC folx to exist in "climbing communities." A lot of work needs to occur to secure more experiences like this for our BIPOC children on the rock. Milo, Lennon, Marlo and Queen Jeanine can tell any this was the best experience theyve had this summer and they've grown with more confidence and deeper connection to each other. We have more girls waiting to soar to new heights and close the adventure gap. Tornadoes, tropical depressions, hurricanes, snowstorms and now a health pandemic, economic, educational and racial crisis. The elements of disaster provide unique challenges especially for BIPOC, LGBTQAI and neurodiverse communities. Children are the most resilient during times of crisis if we as adults lovingly care for their innocence and play. Each challenge strengthens our adversity to all situations lifting our human versatility and our confidence. We embarked on our fi...rst week long trip to Tahoe for an epic adventure of climbing, camping and water excursions this past Monday. The girls immediately connected to the beauty and gifts of the outdoors navigating their epic adventure with every experience. The challenge of the trip seems not how to Covid camp together but setting up a 16 person tent with a strange oncoming mountain thunderstorm. The rest of camp has been a pleasant experience for all exploring the body possibilities in bouldering and dipping into the mountain spring lakes. Though the Bay is rich with exploration, this is not something we can do everyday and certainly not during a pandemic. We are thankful for donations from community like Tarra Freeman providing a 16 person tent, giving the girls each their own Covid-open wing and enough Coleman stoves to share cooking responsibilities. The adventure gap is moving closer for these girls as they find their way on their own path. For more info on our programs>> http://bit.ly/browngirlsclimbing . After the Berkeley incident a few weeks ago, I stepped away from IG to focus our energy on making summer camps fun through a pandemic for as many kids as I could serve. We are in the final two weeks of the summer camp series with this week in Tahoe as the first adventure away in our new van. Thank you everyone for helping to make this happen for our program. The girls are feeling the attention and support and they have learned so much about facing adversity and staying true in our vision and voice. We'll be sharing more of our summer experiences and the Tahoe trip through the IG the next few days. Welcome new friends and supporters and thank you for helping us close the adventure gap for Black and Brown girls everywhere. @ Oakland, California

3 years ago Evolv Owner, Brian Chung hopped on a to Oakland for a 4hr lunch meeting with Brown Girls Climbing Coach, Emily Taylor to discuss her life, career and program. The conversations were hard and tender with first time shares of similar experiences in racism in life and in the industry. Brian later attended Taylor's feature presentation in Voices in the Valley hosted by @browngirlsclimb and @thebrownascenders At the end of the presentation, Evolv offered a commitm...ent to sponsor the vision of the BGC program, providing a foot step closer to the line of equity for Black and Brown girls in climbing. Respecting boundaries of our children's bodies, Evolv wanted no bargaining commitment of social media acknowledgement or climber endorsement. Only for the girls to be fitted with a chance. They have provided us w/shoes at need and every season, chalk bags and crash pads along with financial scholarships assistance for girls every year. Originally POC owned, Evolv was one of the first climbing companies to put diversity in its model focus, featuring BIPOC athletes not as shoe reps, but w/actual signature shoes shaped after their design and needs. They started w/a model of inclusion and our relationship as an opportunity to contribute to our vision, unperformatively bringing them to this honest moment of community collaboration, and financial economic support with integrity. We thank @evolv_worldwide for the YEARS of support for the Brown Girls Climbing program and for staying committed through the hard conversations to elevate change in the industry. @terraincognitamedia @rockandicemag @climbingmagazine @climbingwallassociation @browngirlsclimb @colorthecrag @collectiveliberationclimbing @outdoorindustry #climbingshoes @blklivesmatter #socialjustice #restorativejustice #letblackgirlsclimb #supportblackbusiness #blackclimbersmatter #veganproducts See more
