The brave as hell Wild Weasel United States Air Force pilots were involved in the infamous Operation Rolling Thunder bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. The most well known were the F-105 pilots who flew the mach 2 fighter bomber low and deep into enemy territory in North Vietnam. Such maneuvers were vital to their mission but it also made them vulnerable to NVA’s Soviet surface-to-air missiles (SAM). The F-105 Thunderchief was affectionately nicknamed Thud by pilots, ...a reference to the sound they made after being shot down. Close to a thousand F-105 pilots were shot down during Operation Rolling Thunder. One of those pilots was Col. Roosevelt Hestle, Jr. of the 338th Tactical Fighter Wing. Hestle was the lead pilot on a strike mission against SAM sites in North Vietnam when he was shot down on July 6, 1966. Aerial searches near the crash site were unsuccessful and the hostile territory made a ground rescue impossible. In 2015, human remains were recovered from Hestle’s crash site. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPMAA) used Mitochondrial DNA to compare with Hestle’s brother and a match was confirmed. In 2018, Col. Roosevelt Hestle, Jr. received his final honors at Arlington National Cemetery. A photo given to the daughter of Hestle by the director of the DPMAA read, Dear Corda, as your dad left our Hawaii laboratory for his final journey home, our team treasured rendering him honors. We are grateful to have brought you and your family some closure. God bless you all.

On this day, September 25, 1957, the Little Rock Nine attended Central High School for the first time in Arkansas, after the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unlawful. In an act of defiance, the Arkansas governor, Orval Faubus brought in the National Guard to prevent the nine African American students from entering, vowing that blood will run on the streets if negro people should attempt to enter Central High School. As a response, President Ei...senhower sent in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division to protect the Little Rock Nine. Unfortunately, one of the Nine, Elizabeth Eckford didn’t have a telephone and missed the plan to be escorted by the 101st. She arrived alone and was greeted by a crowd of angry white students and adults. The ordeal she endured while walking to school was captured in one of the most iconic photos of the civil rights era. Students continued to harass the Nine during the school year though violence. Melba Patillo was beaten and had acid thrown on her face. Minnijean Brown was expelled for retaliating against the attacks. Legal challenges to integration continued thoughout the year in an effort to remove the Little Rock Nine from Central High. Despite the violence, all Nine completed high school. Ernest Green was the first to graduate Central High. The school closed at the end of the school year due to Little Rock citizens voting against integration at the school. The remaining Nine completed high school through correspondence or at other high schools. Several of the Little Rock Nine went on to have careers in government and politics. The group has been widely recognized for their role in the civil rights movement. In 1999, President Clinton awarded all nine members the Congressional Gold Medal. See more

Flight of the Intruder, first edition - 4th printing, by Stephen Coonts. Inspiration for the novel came from Coonts’s experience as an A-6 Naval pilot during the Vietnam war. In the film adaptation of FOTI, the carrier scenes were filmed on the USS Independence. But we all know the best part of the movie was Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Virgil Cole.
