Parents often ask how to deal with schools and Special Education Departments. My advise? Circumvent them completely! Find a highly qualified tutor so you and your kid can be happier and more functional. There are thousands of highly qualified tutors and more are trained in Orton-Gillingham systems every single day. Hire one now, and exit yourself from dysfunction.
As the school year starts I’m getting more requests for tutoring and for options on how to deal with schools. Here’s my advise.

It’s great when parents add more tutoring sessions during the summer. It's a great time to make faster progress without the burden of schoolwork.
My hands are completely free of red tape. This is one of the reasons I can help unleash success in your child. I do my homework and I research new teaching methods constantly. And the methods I choose align with my goal of getting growth for your student. https://www.heidinord.com/post/what-way-should-i-go

Here is Dr. Dan Willingham’s video, Teaching Content is Teaching Reading. While this video is from 2009 it still applies today. We are back to a focus on language comprehension in the simple view of reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986) and specifically the upper strands of Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2001): background knowledge, vocabulary, language structure, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. This video speaks to the critical nature of children building content knowledge.../domain-specific knowledge and its impact on reading comprehension. Our children must be able to read words accurately and automatically, having developed a large sight word vocabulary (word knowledge) AND they also need lots of world knowledge. https://www.heidinord.com//dr-dan-willingham-teaching-cont See more

I am considering opening an online homeschool. As I assist students with navigating their regular school programs, I am noticing how much simpler it would be to grow a small online class of 15-18 students, have them tap into the BEST learning resources possible, and meet with the class daily to review goals, set up a daily schedule, and tutor those who are challenged. This way, I can be a positive, inspirational, caring, and fun teacher, without other people holding me back. What I've learned is that if administrators and other teachers are holding fantastic teachers back from being the best version of themselves, it greatly holds the student back. I am researching the best practices for online learning and considering my specialty in the Science of Reading, I think this will open up a whole new world for parents and students.
