I am donating time and legal knowledge to mudslide and fire victims at the Community Disaster Assistance Center at Mt. Calvary Chapel/Church located at 1 North ...Calle Cesar Chavez, Santa Barbara, CA. This is ground zero for help. There are tons of resources here, including FEMA, Red Cross, Visiting Nurses, District Attorney, Public Defender and Me (happy to help and answer any disaster related legal questions for free here!!) I am here from 1:30 to 6:30 Thursday and Friday and 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Saturday. See more

Some thoughts on Insurance Coverage for loses caused from the mudslides/flash floods caused by the recent Thomas Fire observed by a colleague of mine John Thyne. This is certainly not exhaustive but a good start: Landslides, mudslides and mudflow (normally excluded from homeowners or business insurance) are considered different perils that require specific insurance. RAW interview with Geoff Gray after he and his wife Dina and their dog Hank were rescued from the rooftop of Rebecca Riskin's Glenn Oaks home. With sadness, I am updating this post to reflect the recovery of Rebecca's body Wednesday, according to Riskin Partners.

Hate seeing distracted drivers on the road? Well, a new law going into effect this year will make it harder than ever for Californians to use their phones while behind the wheel. We all have been there: the light phases from red to green yet traffic remains at a stand still. The driver in front of you is looking down at something on their lap and you realize that they are too distracted by their cell phone to realize the signal has changed. Not only is this infuriating but it... is downright dangerous! According to distraction.gov, "3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers" in 2014 and these numbers are only rising. These accidents are preventable and with California cracking down, we hope to see these numbers decrease! The new law going into effect will make it illegal to hold your phone while driving. In addition to the laws that have made talking on the phone and texting while driving illegal, this new law will make using maps software and other programs illegal as well if you are holding your phone in your hand. This law hopes to further limit distractions to drivers and keep eyes focused on the road and away from the screen. Check out the link below to find out more about this new law and make sure to stay safe when driving this week (especially with all that rain we have been having!) http://www.ksby.com//new-law-will-make-it-illegal-to-hold-
