Barry Papick’s Acting Blog Meisner versus Strasberg, English versus the method. What is right and what is wrong? I get this question all the time. And in the words of Elton John, Whatever gets you through the night. Acting is never just one thing for all of us. I am different from the next actor out there who is different from the actor acting opposite from him in that TV show or movie he just shot. The bottom line is, how do I tell my best truth without avoiding or blockin...g a side of me that is harder to share. I have studied with them all. Lee Strasberg, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler. I have worked with Shelly Winters, Sean Connery, Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid and many more. All are different, all wonderful and all unique. But the through line is everyone of them said, how can I find my deepest truth and share that with the audience at hand. For me, it was always emotional memory. I believed (and still do) that the only truth that I have is my own. I can not draw from life that has not existed for me. Everything I need, I have gone through and I can find within me. But as a great teacher (and great man) Geoffrey Horne once told me, don’t over work. If it’s there, thank the sensory gods and move on. If we all had perfect belief systems, we could read, imagine and act. Unfortunately we do not. We need to read, relate, imagine and react. The authors words are a roadmap to show us where we need to go within ourselves. How to find that story in our reality. A twenty something actress I was teaching said to me that she didn’t want to explore anything that was unhappy in her past. I suppose she wanted to stay in the rainbows and potpourri of her life. Yet our lives have brought all colors to us. And as actors replaying the human experience, we must share in vivid colors all of that depth. The darkness only makes the light shine brighter, the pain only makes the happiness fuller. I remember the first time I cried painfully in Lee Strasberg’s class, I was never happier in my life (only an actor can say, I was crying hysterically, it was fantastic.) The point being, let’s color the scene with truth, deapth, beauty and pain. Let’s Never be ordinary but always extraordinary.
