Bill Russell . The first African American NBA Head Coach . NBA legend Bill Russell wasn’t always the basketball star we know him to be today. In fact, he was cut from his high school team. However, his coach saw something in him and sent him to the Oakland Boys & Girls Club to hone his basketball skills. In 13 seasons, the dominating center led the Boston Celtics to 11 championships, including two as player-coach, the first African American coach in NBA History. In 1975, B...ill Russell was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Meet our sanitation Superheroes, Krissy and Josh! Thank you for keeping us safe! . .... . The Club implements safety protocols designed to minimize the risk of infection to Covid-19 including: Keeping 6 feet distance at all times, daily health checks for members and staff, working in small pods, mask-wearing at all times, washing hands with soap and water, teaching our members to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth, covering coughs or sneezes with a tissue, then throwing the tissue in the trash. Hand sanitizer pumps are available in all program areas for everyone’s use. Our Boys & Girls Club sanitation cleans and disinfect frequently touched surfaces like door handles, handrails, light switches and bathroom fixtures throughout the day. See more

Misty Copeland American Ballet Theatre’s first African American principal dancer Misty Copeland was 13-years-old when she took her first ballet class at San Pedro Boys & Girls Club. Her newfound passion led her to take to ballet quickly and in just four short years, she joined the American Ballet Theatre. It has been a challenging year for most, but especially for all the fireman working on fires both local and afar. . . Our amazing members at Oxford Preparatory Academy made thank you cards for the fireman that have been so brave fighting the Bond and Silverado fire. So many of our students and staff were evacuated and kept safe!
