Passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) technology, and particularly the monocrystalline silicon version of PERC, is the hot solar adoption trend in 2017. While PERC cells are gaining quickly, there is also a significant shift occurring in the marketplace itself, where mono c-Si cells are rapidly replacing multi c-Si cells. If bifacial PERC modules can consistently demonstrate a 10 to 15 percent gain from the rear side, the market will react quickly and favorably.

The cheapest electricity on the planet is Mexican solar power at 1.77/kWh. This record low price of electricity on earth, just beats out the 1.79/kWh from Saudi Arabia, and is part of a pattern marching toward 1/kWh bids that are coming in 2019 (or sooner). Mexico’s Department of Energy along with Cenace announced the results of the country’s ‘Third Long Term Auction.’ Fifteen bids were accepted from eight wind and solar power companies.

Heliatek installed the ‘world’s largest building integrated organic photovoltaic’ (BIOPV) system on top of a school in La Rochelle, France. The ultra-environmentalist solar installation is seemingly 7-8% efficient, weighs 1/10th the weight of a standard solar panel and is held to the roof via an adhesive sticker on the backside of the panel.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, Croatia, which imports nearly 40 percent of its energy needs, could develop 3,200 megawatts (MW) of solar power by 2030. Renewable power accounts for 28 percent of production, however there's only 52 MW of installed power in solar panels, some six times less than smaller neighbour Slovenia.

According to a U.S. Department of Energy study, the solar industry now employs more people (at 260,000 374,000) than fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), employing roughly only 187,117 combined, in the U.S. electric-power-generation sector. Significantly, the DOE’s 2017 report also notes that solar power employed 43% of the electric-power-generation sector’s workforce in 2016and fossil fuels combined for just 22%. As a job-creating engine, the solar industry is clearly blowing some doors off here.

Belgium’s cumulative installed solar energy capacity may grow from around 3.43 GW currently to up to 18 GW in 2040, according to a report by Belgian high-voltage grid operator Elia. The study, which analyzes both short-term and long-term policy options on the future energy mix for Belgium on the path towards 2050, provides three different scenarios for their solar capacity.

University of Alaska Anchorage installs nine solar panels on one of the university’s buildings. The power generated by the solar panels go directly to the building and will provide around 3 to 7 percent of the building’s power in the summer. A campus organization named the Green Fee Board - which supports projects proposed by students that demonstrate economic solutions to environmental problems - was a major actor in pushing to get the panels installed on the Administration and Humanities building.

A solar-powered floating farm project, called Lotus, combines agriculture and dining under one roof. It is designed to grow fresh produce with a vertical hydroponic garden and then serve it in indoor and outdoor dining areas where visitors can enjoy waterside views and learn more about the production of the food. The future-oriented farming system aims to solve problems relating to the production, sale and distribution of crops and produce in urban areas.
