Anger is a messenger. Though unchecked and unexamined anger can cause problems, anger in itself isn't bad. It is normal, useful, and nudges us to search out the 'quiet' feelings hiding beneath. When we purposefully pause and sit with anger, (ours, our kids', and our partner's) we can figure out what is really going on and find our way through. When your kiddos or teens are upset (frustrated, grieving, angry, sad, worried, scared) we parents want to nothing more than to help. You can tell when you get it right. That subtle shift, the slight exhale and softening, that glance of understanding. You know you are on the right track and are in a better place to understand and support. This is our intention. It seems simple until our instinct to help tangles with our raw love and fear, and in that moment we can easily mi...ss the mark. Finding the words they are looking for, might feel like trick puzzle, but it is actually straightforward once the process is made visible. And you already know how to do it. I promise. I invite you to join me and @richinrelationship for this almost free (donate to homeless children) Family Success Spring webinar tomorrow at 11:30 PT. Join us live or catch the recording when it works for you. Join the Family Success Spring. For at little as a $1 donation directly to families experiencing homelessness, you can have access to reams of empowering and uplifting expert information on building a new future for your family. I think you’re onto something Bob Mistakes are a sure sign you are growing and being challenged. Yeah, embrace the birds, and maybe throw a few happy little trees in there too! #parentingteens #findingflow #csikzentmihalyi #kidsdowelliftheycan #adhdkids #adhdteens #twiceexceptionalkids #therapyhumor @virginialenac
It wasn’t the carpools, and lunches, and homework, and hundreds of other necessary tasks that make up the ‘business’ end, that led us to parenting. Yet so easily we can find that it is here where our time and energy are spent. Even squeezing out some of that connection and joy. Vacations and special outings are amazing opportunities to reconnect. So too are the brief simple moments. Show them that sparkle in your eye just for them. Prioritize finding and creating moments where you enjoy your kiddos exactly as they are. Ask about their thoughts, feeling, and values. Lead with relationship and everyone benefits. #parentsmarternotharder #spark2sparkle #kidsdowelliftheycan #parentingteens #adhdkids #twiceexceptionalkids #thewindatyourback #parentingsupport @virginialenac awesome pic compliments of @adhdexplained
The glowing report is nice to hear and to give. When a teacher gives you a heads up about something you didn’t know, that isn’t easy to hear, it can be a gift too. You can’t address an issue you didn’t know existed. #parenting #parentteacherconference #twiceexceptionalkids #therapyhumor #adhdparenting #adhdkids
Having ups and downs with kids is so common. Everything is going well until some imperceptible shift. Things feel harder, unpleasant, and like a battle. Nobody is happy. Maybe you have been stuck here; parenting so hard and not making progress. Let this be your cue. Doubling down on consequences is tempting, but for some kids; gets you nowhere. Instead, why not step back and put your energy to shifting the momentum. Find the grace to give more love to your child who is asking for it in the most unloving way. Reach out if you need helping making this shift. #kidsdowelliftheycan #spark2sparkle #thewindatyourback #snowballeffect #parentingteens #parentingsupport #familytherapy #adhdparenting @virginialenac
It is so easy for a marriage to become centered around the kids, especially if they struggle. This subtle and gradual slide seems noble and even unavoidable. But it is not helpful. Check out this article I wrote digging into this common and frustrating issue. @boost.counseling.assessment @naviageteens #ADHDparenting #ADHDkids #ADHDteens #kidsdowelliftheycan #parentingtips
That glimmer in her eyes. Kids with ADHD are so much and sometimes too much. Within that same spark is a sparkle. Help her find the place and space to shine. Enjoy the sparkle! #kidsdowelliftheycan #loveconquers #adhdteens #adhdawareness #adhdkids #adhdparenting @virginialenac #spark2sparkle
