This year's Melodrama is called "Nursing a Grudge." It is 34 minutes, has three original songs and features Cadwell von Fowl and Lickpenny. The villains attempt to gain control of a desperately-needed shipment of medical personal protective equipment to corner the market and price gouge. A group of savvy Bonita kids struggle to thwart the evil plan. It was inspired by an evening curbside conversation with Bonita nurse Tanya Mondragon, who was returning home from work after a tough day at the hospital. Villain artwork by Wendy Gracia Fine Art

The Bonitafest Melodrama is San Diego County’s longest running theatre production and has won num...erous awards for theatrical excellence, promoting community and multiculturalism. This year’s musical comedy will once again feature the popular bumbling villains Cadwell von Fowl and Lickpenny. Written by Bonita playwright/composer Dr. Max Branscomb, it is based on actual Sweetwater Valley history. Branscomb and Jaeonnie Davis-Crawford will direct. Kerie Muller is the stage manager. Performances run Wednesday through Saturday, September 25-28, at 7:30pm. The Melodrama is sponsored by the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program, Chula Vista Commission for Cultural Arts and Bonita Optimist Club. This year’s show picks up where last year’s production of Thin Skins and Hayseeds leaves off, just after the Great Sweetwater Valley Flood of 1916. It will explore the creation of the White Chapel and Sunnyside School in what was a cucumber farm in Sunnyside and the destructive forces they faced.
