Many times, the problem isn't the lack of range of motion. Believe it or not, some of the most flexible people (yogis, dancers, gymnasts, martial artists for example) are the ones with higher pain/tightness complaints and injuries. . Here I have @_lolojones__ practicing controlled articular rotations. She is a competitive bodybuilder and a #jiujitsu practioner. Her main complaint was tightness in her hips. Since we assess and not guess, it turns out she has pretty decent pas...sive ranges of motion with no closing angle joint pain. . What happens many times with people that have good range of motion and are very flexible, they tend to have little to no control and strength im those far end ranges. This puts any individual prone for injury or tightness. . Injury occurs when those end ranges have no more strength to absorb a particular load. In this case, we have someone with no injuries but a lot tightness in her hips. . This tightness is a neurological response from the brain and central nervous system. If those joints are being used and pushed beyond its capacity, our nervous system will tighten up the muscles surrounding that particular joint out of protection. Making physical activity and sport very uncomfortable. . What do we do about it? First we teach control. This is what my client is practicing here for the first time. Its not easy. It shouldn't be. Im having her move her hip joint in her full end ranges of motion in a slow and controlled manner. Control comes first. Then we need to work on strengthening those ranges of motion. Eventually your nervous system will begin to trust you with your joints, and let go. . The more control you have of your body, the less your body will control you. . This takes time, a lot of effort and consistency to master. But the results can be phenomenal. . #controlyourself #functionalrangeconditioning #hipcars #manualtherapy #mobilitycoaching #jiujitsu #bodybuilding #bodywork See more

Treatment needs to be specific in order to be effective. My job is to identify your goal and decide what is the best intervention. . Here is Rick. Over a year ago he suffered a bad accident that left him with a severe back injury. When he came to me in December, it had been 10 months since his injury and still in terrible pain. . Any exercise I gave him would only aggrevate his symptoms. So I coached him with some breathing techniques for better IAP (intra abdominal pressure)... and simply resorted to deep-tissue. . As of now, his symptoms have decreased to the point that he can actually go on vacation and have a good time. . In this video I am using some myofacial decompression techniques to help release some muscular tension and the quality of the restricted connective tissue. . He is having trouble fully lengthening his leg with pain running down the back of his leg. Also experiencing some weakness. . After already doing some manual work with isometric loading, im using the cups to lengthen the tissue by addressing a specific area/line of tension. Notice in the end, i have him move his leg to find a deeper line of tension. . The therapy then continues at home. Why? Because no single input of therapy will ever create the lasting change he needs. So he had some homework. Hip CARs, stretching his hammys, isometrics, and some sciatic nerve flossing. . On that note, this has been a 7 months journey for him working with me on a regular basis. Healing takes time and effort. #bodywork #manualtherapy #myofacialdecompression #cuppingtherapy #isometrics #deeptissuemassage #sciatica #sportsrecovery

I've been talking a lot about sports massage for recovery lately. . Reposted from @mariespano Massage is the most effective method for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness and perceived fatigue according to a systematic review (summary of the research) and meta-analysis (combined data from multiple studies). .... Improving performance requires a balance between training and recovery. Training can make you sore and tired which can lead to a temporary drop in muscle force, joint range of motion and performance with a possible increase in injury risk. While recovery is essential, as it helps reduce psychological and physiological stress, elite athletes do not always have adequate time to fully recover. This makes the choice of recovery modalities even more important. . Most recovery modalities decrease exercise-induced muscle damage and inflammation to minimize soreness and fatigue. Among different recovery modalities studied, from stretching to electrostimulation, some were effective and some were not. . Massage, (20-30 minutes of massage performed up to 2 hours after exercise) was the most powerful method reducing delayed onset muscle soreness for up to 96 hours after exercise while also decreasing fatigue. Massage works, in part, by increasing blood and lymph flow. Compression techniques including compression garments and water immersion can also helped decrease muscle soreness and perceived fatigue but both were less effective than massage. . Among the other methods studied, active recovery, compression garments, immersion, contrast water therapy and cryotherapy can also decrease delayed onset muscle soreness. . Cold water immersion may blunt training adaptations I have an earlier post on this. . Massage combined with stretching was also effective. However, stretching, electrostimulation and warm water immersion were not effective for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness. . Pictured here is Braves strength coach and LMT (licensed massage therapist) @howeycscs_lmt . What have you found works for you for decreasing soreness and fatigue? . #sportsrecovery #sportsmassage #athletictraining #musclesoreness #bodywork #bodybuilding #lifting #running #muscle See more
