The Los Angeles County Fire Department, Los Angeles FD, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the Grossman Burn Centers held a joint news conference today... (Friday) to remind residents about holiday safety. The news conference included a demonstration of how quickly and intensely a Christmas tree can burn. This demonstration was conducted by professionals; please DO NOT try this at home! According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one out of every 31 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death each year. One of every three home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems, and a heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in every four of the fires. If you choose to have a live Christmas tree, here are some tips: - Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. - Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. - Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. - Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
