Happening NOW: Reopening of Schools with Dr. Baca and Veronica Arreguin
Congratulations to Laura Aguirre, counselor at E. Los Angeles Renaiss Acad At Esteban E. Torres High #2, for winning the Sal Castro Award! I am extremely honored to be nominated for the Sal Castro Award. I became a counselor because I wanted to guide youth to reach their full potential and empower them to be leaders. Every day I feel honored and inspired to work with amazing students in East Los Angeles. I hear their stories and struggles they face daily, but they don’t let those obstacles stop them from achieving their dreams. They are resilient and courageous. My students are the reason I wake up every morning happy to go to work. They are the future and I am excited to see the great things they will continue to accomplish!

Congratulations to Lara Kissling, ELD and English teacher at @belmonthigh, for winning the Sal Castro Award! From the beginning of my life, I was called to teach. My mother was a teacher at LAUSD. She taught me that learning is a lifelong skill that must be shared with the world. It wasn’t until I became a teacher that her words fully made sense to me. Every life we encounter and every student we teach is an opportunity to empower the community. Maya Angelou states in Oprah...’s Master Class interview that love liberates. These words resonate with me every day that I enter the classroom. Love for teaching, love for learning, love for humankind is what will liberate students from any obstacle they may face. When students see that their presence in class matters, it not only motivates them to achieve their dreams, but also encourages them to go beyond what they thought they could do. I empower my students by demonstrating how love liberates and teaching them that it's possible to be the best version of themselves that they could be. That includes being anti-racist, anti-discrimination, and fostering genuine human connections to create a decolonial world. See more
Congratulations to Beatriz Quinteros, history teacher at @eca_lattc, for winning the Sal Castro award! Teachers have always profoundly influenced my life. Aside from my hard working parents, I think my teachers really helped shape my future. Some of the teachers I remember most taught me simply by being. I wanted to be like those teachers because I truly believe they make the biggest impact in their communities. I also chose this profession because teaching means you never stop learning and growing. Lastly, I simply love working with students. The best part about my job is seeing them flourish into amazing human beings. "
