I know what you’re thinking Um. Yes there is. Acne prone skin. That’s bad skin. Hear me out. ... Acne prone skin is a skin condition. Yes, it can be physically painful, emotionally painful, and very difficult to control. However, your skin (even if it’s covered with acne) is doing what it needs to do, keep your blood, tissues and organs together. It’s doing its primary function, even with this skin condition. I don’t want to minimize any pain you may have with your acne. As someone who suffered with acne from age 12-30, I totally get it. I’ve helped dozens of people control their acne and I’ve seen what it can do for self esteem and self confidence. However, I just want to change the way we think about acne. It’s not good or bad. It’s just a skin condition that you can work to control if you want to. If not, it’s ok because your skin is still performing its intended function. The only bad skin I am concerned about (and I don’t even call it that) is skin that is over-exfoliated, over-sensitized or a compromised barrier. If your barrier is compromised, I am concerned about that and that is my number one priority, as a compromised barrier can be unhealthy skin. As always, leave questions below! See more

Let’s talk about moisturizers. First of all, I really love this moisturizer as a BODY ONLY moisturizer (very important note: if you have acne on your body, this is NOT for you). But, please don’t use this on your face. (Unless you don’t have acne prone skin). I can’t tell you how many new acne clients have told me that they use this moisturizer (or something similar) on their face. (This moisturizer is very heavy, full of shea butter - good for super dry ski...n but terrible for acne prone skin). The reason? Their skin is SO DRY. They may have patches of oiliness as well, but their skin is so dry that it’s borderline painful. Why is their skin so dry? Over exfoliation. They either exfoliate too much, use products way too strong for them, or have been trying at home treatments to help with their acne (I’m looking at you, Aztec Clay Mask and the Ordinary ). Over-exfoliating the skin can cause damage to the barrier that can sometimes take weeks (if not months) to heal. It’s like working out REALLY hard and not stretching or drinking water. It’s not good for your body. Knowing what products to use to exfoliate your skin and how often to use them may be the most challenging part of a skincare routine. I’ve spent hours learning how to best recommend exfoliating products to clients and it’s never an exact science. It’s not something I can say will work for you just because it’s worked for someone else. So much goes into choosing the correct exfoliating routine and it’s not one size fits all, ESPECIALLY when acne is concerned. If you have really dry patches AND oily skin, there’s a good chance you’re over exfoliating and not hydrating enough. As always, leave questions below! See more
