To those who are doing THE WORK and feel like they are unseen because of the lack of acknowledgement or celebration, know that your work is important and you ar...e, in fact, CHANGING LIVES. The awards do NOT validate our purpose. They are exciting and affirming, but if they never come, we must be able to stand firm in our mission. I went a long time feeling irrelevant because my work wasn’t winning awards, but as the #VictoryNotes from those who who were inspired came in, I realized my impact! Keep doing the work. Keep dreaming. Awards are just the cherry on top of your already audacious life. #TroublemakerLessons

Communities on the frontlines of LA’s oil drilling crisis have been subjugated to breathing dirty air for far too long. Studies linking #COVID19 deaths to air pollution demonstrate that it is more important than ever to phase out oil drilling. LA City Council has the opportunity to pursue a city-wide phase out and be a true champion of environmental justice. STAND-LA is inviting councilmembers to participate in a town hall and panel discussion to hear from frontline community members on the importance and urgent need for a phase out and #JustTransition. Join us to hear about this potentially groundbreaking step for LA climate and environmental justice. Thursday, March 25th at 6PM. RSVP NOW! https://actionnetwork.org//stand-la-virtual-town-hallsourc

Florence Nwanzuruahu Nkiru Nwapa was born in Oguta, eastern Nigeria, which was then a British colony. Both of her parents, Christopher Ijeoma and Martha Nwapa, were teachers. She was educated at the University of Idaban, receiving her B.A. in 1957. Nwapa continued her studies in England, earning in 1958 a degree in education from the University of Edinburgh. After returning to Nigeria in 1959 Nwapa worked as an education officer in Calabar for a short time, and then she taugh...t geography and English at Queen's School in Enugu. From 1962 to 1964 Nwapa was an assistant registrar at the University of Lagos. During the Nigerian Civil war, which broke out in 1967, she left Lagos with her family. Like many members of the Igbo elite, they were forced to return to the eastern region after the end of the conflict. Nwapa served as Minister for Health and Social Welfare for the East Central State (1970-1971). Her tasks included finding homes for 2000 war orphans. Later on, she worked for Commissioner for Lands, Survey, and Urban Development (1971-1974). In 1983 the Nigerian government under President Shehu Shagari bestowed on her one of the country's highest honors, the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). By her own town, Oguta, she was awarded in 1978 the highest chieftaincy title, Ogbuefi of Oguta. Nwapa's work has been the subject of many graduate theses and doctoral dissertations.
