I didn't want this response to be reduced to just an instagram post. It shouldn't be fleeting and confined to the moment. And most people would say leave it for your personal account...well this business is personal for me. I’m afraid that I’m going to say the wrong thing, because so much of what needs to happen is listening and allowing the voices that aren't mine to speak. I just want to echo what I've learned. It's important to not sit silent. What happened to George... Floyd is unconscionable. Police brutality is unacceptable. So is racial profiling, unfair sentencing practices, gerrymandering, redlining, and the thousands of policies and practices that have been in place since this country began. So we need to look at how we got here, because it isn't isolated to policing. Racial injustice goes beyond that. It’s how we talk. It’s how we do business. It’s how we live. The conversation and the fight for anti-racism can't stop when the protests stop. Growth is painful. And if you don't feel the pain while looking within, you aren't doing it right. If we feel uncomfortable about what's going on, then maybe finally we are coming to grips with our own role in all of this. So what next? It means that we have to step up. We have to listen, understand, be compassionate and most of all not stand for it. It's not just about voting. It's about changing how WE work, play and live with each other. Because our government is simply a reflection of us. Solutions are much more than a hashtag. Solutions might start with a march, but where do those steps lead? Somewhere our leaders haven't taken us. If, like me, you’re a person of privilege, get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Don’t just look around, look within. Talk less and listen more. We live in a world that struggles to love each other every day. But we also live in a world that manages to love each other every day. Be hopeful. Be helpful. But don't be complacent. Listen and watch what young people protesting and on social media are saying...because they are sharing far more information on how to do the right thing than anything I can write.
