The simplest way that this attack gains access to a network is via email and whilst there are systems in place to block malicious emails they are not fool proof and these mails may still appear in your inbox. The following guidelines may help you spot malicious mails;- The email may appear to be from a genuine business or organisation. Criminals will impersonate, individuals, businesses (e.g. Apple, UPS, Amazon or banks) in an effort to entice you click on a link or open a...n attachment. Be wary of emails telling you that you have a tax refund, asking you to view a link because it’s funny, or view a picture. Be wary of emails asking you to reset your password. Unless you have specifically asked for a password to be reset it is most likely malicious. Check for poor English, poor spelling, poor grammar and strange alphanumeric characters in the title or body of the email. Are you expecting an email from that person, do you know them or are they a stranger? Are you expecting an email from that company, do you have regular dealings with them? Even if you have regular contact with an individual or company take a moment to validate the mail, their email account may have been hacked and could be spreading the virus. Visually validate any links in the email, does it look genuine ? Many malicious links have complicated and non .com based domains. Hover your mouse over the link, does the pop-up that appears show the same address as the link? Never run an attachment directly from a mail if you are unsure of its origins, save it to your desktop first. Finally, at all times use your common sense and discretion, start with the assumption that the mail is malicious and work your way to confirming it is safe before clicking on any links or images the email may contain. Web pages can also be used to coax users into clicking on links or images in pop-up windows. Please be extra vigilant at the moment and exercise extra care when browsing the web. If at any point you are unsure about a mail and its contents or a web page pop up please let me know or contact bITvision help desk on 805-640-3300 or at [email protected]
