Hundreds of malnourished Amazon chicks rescued in Brazil in September, can thanks Rolf C. Hagen Inc. for its substantial donation of Tropican Hand-Feeding Formula, developed by the Hagen Avicultiral Research Institute. The over 500 smuggled Amazons were tightly crammed into wire mesh cages and in poor health. The birds were transferred to the nonprofit Environmental Conservation Organization in Hendersonville, N.C. The group sent out an SOS for help, faced with the overwhelmi...ng number of frail and hungry fledglings. An appeal for baby parrot food was sent out to the international avian community and Hagen responded with a 500-pound donation of its hand-feeding formula. birdStuff is proud to carry Hagen's Tropican Diets and Supplements for use with your own birds! Chewing versus eating: I mentioned this to a customer so thought I'd share it here. Their bird was starting to chew everything, so they worried the bird was bored with its (excellent) diet. The answer is-birds are just hardwired to chew! Dogs' and cats' mouths are more limited than birds-just for eating (includes chewing bones), carrying young and occasionally defense. Birds do the same, but lacking arms (wings technically are but have a single specialized function), their mo...uth/beak has to do a lot more things. It is used in courting, feeding of young, as a pair of hands/sensory organ, and many other things-including chewing through the wood of a tree to make a nest site and making shavings for the bottom. They want, no they need, to chew. It's an important to them as eating-but the two aren't necessarily related. So if your bird is into chewing, by all means give him something to chew! See more

Update on Nuts n Nuggets: Thanks everyone for trying..but Lafeber did pull the plug on the product. I stocked up (480 bags!) but they are all gone. We are carrying the Pelletberries and I will be glad to give you a sample, and I am diligently looking for a comparable item which is a palatable and healthy snack.
