BUSINESS LEADER OF THE YEAR Celia Diaz Position: Chief executive officer and executive director of the Binational Emergency Medical Care Committee... Age: 70 Residence: Chula Vista Celia Diaz was only 9 years old when her father died in a horrific Tijuana theater fire that claimed the lives of more than 200 people. But one thing she remembers most about the tragedy was the outpouring of sympathy and aid from across the border. A lot of people on the San Diego side of the border came over to help, Americans who barely spoke Spanish or didn’t speak it at all, Diaz said. These were people who didn’t even know us, yet some of them even helped my mother open a little restaurant to support our family. The diminutive, feisty grandmother has been returning the favor, and then some, for more than three decades. Diaz and her Binational Emergency Medical Care Committee has helped transport about 17,000 Americans injured in Mexico back across the border for medical treatment since it began in 1976. The committee was launched by Bay General Community Hospital in Chula Vista. Diaz, an administrative aide at the time, was tapped to spearhead the effort because she was bilingual. After the hospital was sold in 1990, Diaz took on the project as her own. It’s a way to give back, and help people on both sides of the border, Diaz said. Diaz is the mother of four, and has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In 1991, Diaz founded United International Health Net, a company that contracts with Mexican hospitals and doctors to provide medical services to union members.
