The roads are more dangerous when rain comes after a dry spell. (Rain slicks the road with accumulated oil and dirt). ... 1. Turn your headlights on 2. Stay toward the middle lanes water tends to pool in the outside lanes. If you find yourself in a skid, remain calm, ease your foot off the gas, and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. This procedure, known as steering into the skid, will bring the back end of your car in line with the front. For cars without anti-lock brakes, avoid using your brakes. If your car has ABS, brake firmly as you steer into the skid. 3. Don’t use cruise control If you hydroplane, cruise control can cause you to lose control. And, if you do hydroplane, the lack of traction may cause the cruise control to accelerate. 4. Drive smarter Keep your distance. You never know when the person ahead of you will spin out.
