WINTER STORM WATCH The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the San Bernardino County Mountains. The watch is in effect from Thursday af...ternoon through Friday afternoon for elevations above 5000 feet. ** HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED ** Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, with localized amounts over 24 inches (2 FEET), are possible. This combined with significant snow already on the ground could cause greater impact. Severe travel disruptions with treacherous driving conditions above 5000 feet. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. CARRY CHAINS as they will be required for travel in the mountains. A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts on this strong winter storm. MOUNTAIN WINTER TRAVEL ADVISORY: With current storm conditions, the Big Bear Sheriff's Station would like to remind motorists traveling in local mountain commun...ities of chain control requirements. IT IS THE LAW for ALL vehicles to carry traction control devices while driving in local mountain communities in winter months. When R2 chain restrictions are called into effect, chains are required to be installed on all vehicles except 4-wheel or All-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. To determine if your vehicle has snow tires, look for MS, M/S, or M+S (mud and snow) on the sidewall. Some tires may alternatively have a pictograph of a snowflake stamped on the sidewall. R3 chain restrictions mean that ALL vehicles must have chains installed. There are no vehicle exceptions when R3 chain restrictions are in effect. Driving is not recommended in R3 conditions unless it is absolutely necessary. Winter weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Be sure to check road conditions often. Visit the Caltrans website at http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for the most up-to-date information. Click on the Links tab and then enter the highway number on which you intend to travel. Determine alternate routes to your final destination in the event of road closures. Be prepared before you start your trip! Make sure you have a full tank of gas, full battery on your cell phone, chains in your vehicle, appropriate winter apparel, snacks and water. Winter traffic on mountain roads can be heavy at times and travel can be delayed by several hours when traffic collisions occur. Put your headlights on and use fog lights when appropriate. It is not recommended to use high beam or flashing hazard lights during foggy conditions. Hazard lights should be used in the event your vehicle becomes disabled and is not moving. If you experience car trouble while you are traveling, safely pull to the side of the road out of the lanes of travel and then put your hazard lights on. Use caution and travel safely!
