Day 2 of the clarifier assembly. Yesterday we got the drain pipe and column in. It was too hot to plumb it. Today we got it pretty damn plumb. That’s over 14’ span so it’s damn plumb. We pushed hard and got all the feed well arms in place and the big rake arms in rough position. We also placed the upper box and cage in position but it’s too hot to install. The parts are painted black and in the 110+ heat the parts heat up to about 140. It’s hot enough you can’t touch it w...ith bare hands and you can’t hold anything for long with the maxi flex gloves. It was a great day. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. #blackheartbuilding ##yeahbuddy #progress #slowandsteady #butalsomovefaster #generalcontractor #generalbuilder #generalengineering #water #wastewatertreatment #watersystems #clarifier

Desert throwdown 2020. Crane ops doing down and flying the first wave of parts into the basin for reassembly. It’s hot out here, the work is tough and sweaty and we wouldn’t have it any other way. #blackheartbuilding # #builder #contractor #generalcontractor #workforwater #wastewaterlife #wastewatertreatmentplant #sandiego #smile

Here are some of the little pieces of rebar and the glue plug from last weeks glue operation. Big stuff takes awhile to drill thru #contractor #concrete #rebar #glue #hilti

Teachable moment here: Last week I was working in a waste water clarifier basin and I need to remove the old system hardware and install the new stuff. I shot the grade and got the alignment set no problem. We got holes templated and drilled we did hit rebar and that took awhile to get thru but we did get thru it. ... The best way to ensure all 12 of the new anchors were straight and plumb was to tighten them in the template and set them at once. We shimmed and leveled the template so it was perfectly level. All was going great. Here’s where it went wrong. I used hilti re500 epoxy to set the anchors. It’s got a 20 min work time at 100. It was about 100 on site so I thought I had 20 min to fill the holes with glue and set the template, double check level and grade and whammy, I’m done. Not so lucky, I over looked ground temp. The ground temp in the concave basin was 136 even though the glue process was super fast and smooth the ground started cooking the glue immediately. I didn’t figure this out until after. The guys and I went to set the template with anchors and it wouldn’t go in. The last glued holes got about 5 deep. The first glued holes got about 2 deep. I thought maybe a rock or glue straw was in the hole. Nope. Hardening glue. It took three of us to yank the template back up so it wasn’t set incorrectly in the ground. We set it aside on buckets so it didn’t attaché it self to the ground. We had no choice but to let the glue cure. At that time I decided to call it for the day. We let the glue in the holes dry. The next day we re drilled and cleaned the holes. The dry glue on the anchors chipped off. The glue is extremely strong but also brittle. So if you smack the anchors on the ground the glue breaks right off. The lesson is to always watch your ground and air temps when flying anchors in. We lost a foot bit of manpower and a few hundred in glue but even that was cheaper than having the anchors set crooked. That would mean core drilling them out. Patching the holes, getting new 7/8x16 316 stainless anchors and more glue. I’ll never make that mistake again. #blackheartbuilding # #generalcontractor #generalbuilding

I don’t have words other than; get a garage stay humble, and stay hungry. Good things don’t come to those that wait. Good things come to those that get up, do the work and bust their ass off.
