Our Malibu project has received its final occupancy permits, making it only the 4th whole house Woolsey fire rebuild to be completed (with 350+ projects still in the process.) The owners are moving in just ten months after submitting plans to the building department a rapid timeline for permitting and construction considering the setbacks from Covid. That’s a wrap on our fire rebuild project in Ojai in collaboration with Blackbird Architects. This 2000 sf home is complete with a site built 1450 sf wrap around deck, eight foot tall doors, and vaulted ceilings. The non-combustible siding and roofing along with roof top fire sprinklers are added protection for possible fire threats in the future. Malibu Residents Gaining Ground With Modular, Prefabricated Rebuild With Bevyhouse, via Malibu Surfside News A couple who lives behind Malibu High School started the rebuilding process immediately after the Woolsey Fire & received approval from the City to build in October 2019. They opted for a modular build, constructed by Bevyhouse As the home’s plans were weaving through the permitting process & while grading on the lot was carried out, Bevyhouse was already constructing ...their home at a warehouse in Santa Paula. On Jan. 27 Bevyhouse delivered the 5-piece structure on flatbed trucks with crews on site from 9am-3pm, according to Bryan Henson, owner & CEO of Bevyhouse. Then crews got to work on a pitched roof, driveway & garage. The septic system was expected to follow shortly This home is one of 4 Malibu rebuilds by Bevyhouse, who also has worked on custom modular homes for those impacted by the Thomas Fire & the Mendocino County Redwood Valley Fire. Malibu is actually doing a fantastic job. They learned from [other] municipalities. The City is doing a really good job trying to make it as easy as possibly considering the codes & regulations they have to follow. I’ve really been impressed. Further, Henson noted that he has built homes in Malibu before the fire & it was a different process. He also recognizes, however, that the rebuilding process can be frustrating as it’s something hundreds of Malibu homeowners were not looking to undertake: [Building a new home] wasn’t their dream; it’s just happening to them, so most of them really aren’t familiar with how that process works at all Henson stands by modulars as a different, better & faster way of building a house. He likens it to buying a new car. You wouldn’t expect that car to be shipped in pieces & built in your driveway, he said. It just makes so much more sense to assemble off-site & then bring it together Bevyhouse’s modulars are built with a steel frame, and adhere to the strictest of site built housing codes.
