Contempt and emotional invalidation of your pain are glaring red flags - both in relationships as well as in systemic injustice. The inability to identify with ...your pain, empathize or extend sympathy is inhumane enough, but to rub salt on the wound by minimizing, denying or pathologizing your emotional reactions to the pain you are suffering is beyond cruelty. I have so much more to say about this, and how this form of narcissism pervades institutions and certain careers (like the fields of medicine and psychiatry where some unempathic people are given unwarranted authority and power over others in depraved, horrifying ways) as well as toxic individuals in personal relationships.
