Best Brains Honors Black History Today, we honor Molly Williams. Equal parts folk hero and real life heroine, Molly's story is legendary in New York City. And you know what they say, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. We don't know much about Molly Williams. Born a slave in America's early days, not many records about her survive. However, her accomplishments have echoed throughout time.... Molly's owner, Benjamin Aymar, was a wealthy merchant, and like many of his contemporaries, worked in a volunteer firehouse, before the FDNY was a government-run service. Molly assisted him and the other men, learning to work the firefighting equipment. So the story goes, when a fire broke out during the blizzard of 1818, and all the firefighters were too sick with the flu to battle the blaze, Molly alone answered the call, saving lives and becoming a legend. Molly lived in a time when basic human decency was not guaranteed to Black Americans, but she showed what is best about humanity: our willingness to help one another. Her tale is immortalized in the children's book "Molly, by Golly!" written by Dianne Ochiltree and illustrated by Kathleen Kemly.
At Best Brains, we believe that Black History should be celebrated all year long! As a parent, the easiest way to do this for our kids is to stock their bookshelves with stories written by and featuring Black voices. The best way to understand and appreciate other cultures and points-of-view is through reading their stories in their own voice. Children have huge imaginations, and books can tap into that power to promote empathy, understanding, and social awareness. Let's get reading!
