A glimpse into one of our upcoming digital projects in progress from @astriasuparak #behindthescenes #closetstudio #theoptionto #digitalart... Repost from @astriasuparak Turned the closet into a recording studio last week. Borrowed a professional mic from a friend (thank you, @kaaaaate!), covered the doors with blankets um, 'loaned' by airlines, and threw all the towels on the closet floor in an attempt to soundproof the space. Not crazy about my vocal performance (first time doing a voiceover), but the computer generated voices weren't quite working. Going to finish the audio mix today, then attempt to add subtitles. Video will be released online on February 2nd, via@berkeleyartcenter #VirtuallyAsian #AsianFuturesWithoutAsians

You can see Emma Robbins’ work, including this piece, Treaty No. 9 from 2018, in our current exhibition WE HAVE TEETH TOO. It appears alongside pieces by Natalie Ball, Jordan Ann Craig, and Amanda Roy. Curated by artist Natani Notah, the show is on view through December 19. Visits are by appointment at the link in our bio. Emma is a Diné artist, activist, and environmentalist with a passion for empowering Indigenous women. Through her artwork, she strives to raise awarenes...s about the lack of clean water in Native American nations and educate viewers about issues such as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis. Robbins completed her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied Modern Latin American Art History in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has exhibited both in the United States and internationally, and is a 2020 Aspen Institute Healthy Communities Fellow. She splits her time between Los Angeles and the Navajo Nation. #emmarobbins #treaty #series #mixedmedia #sculpture #sewing #contemporaryart #wehaveteethtoo #natalieball #jordananncraig #amandaroy #nataninotah #berkeleyartcenter

So excited for this original essay by Kimberley Acebo Arteche (@kimbr). We invited her to connect works from BAC’s 1995 exhibition 10 x 10: TEN WOMEN / TEN PRINTS to the issues and concerns of today. She compares the urgency and activism of printmaking as a visual medium to Internet meme culture, as well as reflecting on specific art works from that show 25 years ago. It’s the first of six digital projects we commissioned to support new work during the pandemic. We’ll be rol...ling them out every few weeks from now through February. Find them at the link in our bio. Images: 1. Big shout-out to artist Natalie Ball for her Joan Mitchell Foundation award!!! We are so proud to have Natalie’s work in our current exhibition WE HAVE TEETH TOO, on view thru Dec 19. Curated by Natani Notah, the show features additional works by Jordan Ann Craig, Emma Robbins and Amanda Roy. Gallery appointments open at the link in our bio. Repost from @natalie_m_ball I am a 2020 Joan Mitchell Foundation, Painters & Sculptors Grant recipient! I got the call when we were evacuating from the wildfire. It feels empowering to continue to protect and provide for my babies, to rest, and to push forward a sustainable studio practice making the work that I want to make. Congratulations to the amazing 24 other artists. Mo Sepkecha, @joanmitchellfdn!

I DON’T WANT TO LET YOU IN. As part of a series of banners by @sanctuarycityproject currently installed on our bridge, this phrase refers to the words undocumented immigrants are instructed to say if ICE knocks on their door, as well as the effective sentiment of the Trump administration’s immigration policy. It also reflects the unease many of us have felt during the shelter-in-place orders due to Covid. Check out Sanctuary City Project’s banners now and join us for a conversation with the artists on Tues, Oct 27. Register at the events link in our bio.

So excited to bring you a new socially distanced participatory project with @feralfabric. With your help, they’ll make a community banner in the form of a snake to install on our bridge this November. Pick up your free DIY Fabric Kit at BAC this Saturday, Oct 17 from 11 am to 5 pm. Or DM us to have one mailed to you or delivered in the East Bay. Per the artists: In this difficult time, we are drawn to the snake as a symbol of creativity, healing, regeneration, and rebirth.... Each fabric panel should reflect something the maker wants to change or shed in the process of transformation. The artists will also host an optional Zoom work session on Sat, Oct 24 at 2 pm, where they’ll share techniques and a bit of history about radical textiles. Details at the Events link in our bio. #feralfabric #radicaltextiles #participatoryart #diyfabric #communitybanner
