A quick excerpt form my new memoir, Excelsior District: 402 Avalon Ghosts, Publishing in 2022: "I whispered, hoping the ghost would respond to me. What do you want me to know? I said. Another cold breeze rustles my hair. I moved in a circle and tripped on a small table bedside the dirty green sofa. I gathered some composure. What do you want?... Around my skinny neck I feel a rope, no, not a rope but a pair of hands hot and massaging. And there’s nothing on my neck but tingling skin. Scared out of my wits I whispered. Were you strangled? A puff of hot air rushed against my mouth. You were strangled and you want me to know about it? Another puff of air. You want the world to know you were killed by Charles Kankralik, yes? I waited. Silence filled my brain, and then my mom started playing her accordion downstairs, the melody of Midnight Sonata muffled through the floor. Moving for the front doorknob another puff of air hit my lips. I stopped. Yes, I said, does your breath mean, yes? My lips singed with heat. I hoped it wasn’t a kiss and it felt like a kiss from Gianna Santoro, a screamer in the night, a ghost who has been haunting 402 Avalon since she was strangled to death. My first real kiss and it had to be from a ghost. Panicky, I held my breath, pulled the door open and tore out of the apartment into the hall, slamming the door and locking it behind me. The door from the stairwell flew open. Mr. Bernardi jumped up the last step with a black lunch box in his left hand. The panic in his eyes caught my eyes. Words gushed from his mouth. I told you stupid kid, get out of here I’ll tell you father. Brushing past him, my feet tumbled down the steep stairs. I opened the door but before I jumped outside, I looked back. Mr. Bernardi was an outline at the top of the stairs, flicking his middle finger at me.
My Special Video today. This is the Monterey Bay Aquarium 37 year anniversary. Penguins are fascinating to watch. I love recording videos. Watch to the end and meet Ben, my doppelgänger who looks at me right in the eyes.
Puff the magic dragon, and the moon popped up over Monterey Bay tonight.
Backside panoramic view of Fisherman's Wharf. Is this the beginning of my first Murder Mystery novel?
If I could write a new John Steinbeck novel, I’d title it Old Fisherman’s Wharf.
A chilling yet touching story about innocence and age, and those who didn’t have either because death came for them before their time. Part childhood, part thriller...tender and genuine. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EXAWVK0
402 Avalon Avenue. San Francisco, California. Who knew a woman was strangled to death in a room on the second floor? Who knew a man would die in the studio apartment in the back of the first floor? Who knew ghosts had inhabited the house for decades? Had a young man hanged to death in the attic? Who knew? The house knew where I was raised. I also knew, because I felt it, I experienced the deaths inside me as a little boy being scared to live there. "402 Avalon." Read it. Some events I had to leave out, whereas awful dreams might scare the reader. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EXAWVK0

A short excerpt from The Extraordinary Marriages of Suzy and Ben page 20: At Circle Star Suzy said she was in love with me. I was in love with her. Love was not like turning water into wine, or being struck by lightning, it grows slowly before, during, and after unfortunate and fortunate circumstances. We were not a Sonny & Cher couple, arguing and disputing one another’s talents or love. We were compatible, she was a Taurus and I was a Capricorn. Love can complicate the fuck... out of relationships, and I was helpless in the grip of instinct. Our relationship was somewhat complicated. Our rapport resembled whiplash when you are fine one minute, and the next minute you are rear ended in an auto accident. We were in love. I know, it does not make sense, but what does make sense? Inside the theater, Johnny Mathis was onstage and singing the song "It’s Wonderful!" to a packed theater of 3,270 patrons. Suzy and I were standing inside the theatre doors listening and watching the fabulous Johnny. His singing voice was beautifully melodic and smooth and many octaves, so we listened, and best of all, we were enthralled with his words: Sometimes we walk hand in hand by the sea And we breathe in the cool salty air You turn to me with a kiss in your eyes And my heart feels a thrill beyond compare Then your lips cling to mine It's wonderful, wonderful Oh, so wonderful, my love. While listening I asked Suzy; What did you say to me?
