When we, as jurors, witnesses and attorneys, go to court to sit through a trial during this pandemic, the very least that we should be able to expect is that the government is not knowingly putting our health at risk. At the ECHOJ courthouse, three members of court staff and two employees at the clerk's office tested positive for Covid-19. The first exposure was known as early as July 10th. At least one of the staff members exposed works mainly in Santa Rita Jail, where th...ere is currently an outbreak. The court apparently informed staff, judicial officers and members of the district attorney and public defender's offices of the exposure in a timely manner. The public, including potential jurors, defense counsel, defendants, and witnesses only learned about it two weeks later (i.e. yesterday) in the paper. Withholding this information puts the public at risk. Proceeding with jury trials in these circumstances is unconscionable. Courts must do better to ensure that trials can be fair and safe during this already stressful time. See more

Thank you, Hadar Aviram. An important message to the Governor and a reminder that those in prison were not sentenced to death by Covid-19, nor is a prison pandemic restrained by the prison walls. Those communities with pandemic outbreaks in the prison will suffer spikes in the general population.
