THE ART OF A PERSON! SIR COLVILLE YOUNG! BELIZEAN ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE & CULTURAL ICON!... (Special Tribute to Sir Colville Young: Governor General of Belize) By Bilal Morris Throughout the 2019 Belize Caye Fest in Los Angeles, California, the proud and astute image of Sir Colville Young, Belize's Governor General for years now, caught my attention and touched me deeply. It brought me back to my high school days in the 70s in Belize when he was our principal at St. Michaels College that brought out of me the artistic spirit that has become my literary and artistic forte. "The Doctor" as we called him was an exceptionally brilliant mind that made a tremendous impact on many of us today who have made something of ourselves. Being a teenager who was searching for that within us that we didn't know yet, he inspired for me a whole generation of brilliant Belizean artists and personalities who were fortunate to have been taught by him. Doc had also crossed my childhood as a boy being coached by him in a St. John's Primary School Standard II performing arts group that played at the Bliss's Festival of Arts. The song we sang and played was the Belizean traditional song, "Mr. Martin Leaky Old Dory". The music and play is still clear in my head, and our rehearsing it under his magnetic artistic style, he made us practice and acted out that song to perfection. On the day of the performance at the Bliss, we stole the show and won a prize. The colorful Caribbean style costumes he allowed us to design using our own creativity was one of the reasons why we won. Mine was a swaging frilly pants with many colorful pieces of cloth draping down, and a painted stenciled T-shirt wore with a frilly straw hat my dad loan me that he used on Christmas Day with his Bram and Brukdong band. In reflecting on the theme of the Belizean folk song, it dramatized the village life of Belizean Kriole men who became one of the same with the Caribbean sea, being fishermen and laborers of the former British Honduras now Belize. Dr. Young was deeply into Belizean Kriole culture that epitomizes the linguistic and anthropology of the black people of that country who came to Belize as slaves, cut the mahogany for the British colonialist, and built the nation state of Belize. While he was our principal at St. Michael's for about three years, we had heard him discuss with us students the richness of the Belizean Kriole culture and language while placing an important value on writing and speaking the Queen's English to the best of our ability. The vernacular of his Kriole lingua franca was amazing, and as he spoke it and show us it's connection to the English Language as a form of broken English, his posture and presentation was captivating. He would pass by our classroom though he was not our teacher, and suddenly call out to a student in the class to sit upright and pay attention. He did his rounds like that, and there was a kind of fear of him though his demeanor did not express any kind of harsh headmaster's strictness. He was able to mix the creative arts with an exciting academic inspiration that drag you into the world of learning as something fun as well as liberating. My soul drew close to it, and Dr. Young's aura as an academician of exquisite caliber, transcended positively upon many of us at the all boys Anglican high school that had developed a reputation for educational excellence since the 1940s in Belize. One day he substituted in one of our second form English classes, and had us copy verbatim from the board an entire essay about art. As he completely wrote out the piece with chalk on the board in one of the most precise and cursive handwriting, he walked gingerly through the class with a slick smile on his face to check and correct any kind of crooked handwriting. He was so meticulous in his style that every "T" had to be crossed in his drilling us to take pride in our penmanship. While running a school and organizing his teachers, Doc also took pride in developing the creativity in his students with music appreciation classes. In between breaks in our class schedules, he took us to the library and encouraged us to read books about the best of European composers like Beethoven and Mozart. It was the part that made me became so very excited about my education at St. Michael's. In my still remembering the opening sentence of the essay on art that begins with the line, "The art of a person begins when someone in the community feels the urge to create", it is amazing how much memorizing and learning the whole essay became a technique in education in the day. Gracing his presence recently in Belize City at one of the Public's Supermarket in 2019, my curiosity had always asked me to probe him about his artistic and linguistic works. And so my approaching and questioning him about the essay on art drew his attention and he gave me a big smile. However, he didn't remember anything about it at all because he explained that it was so long ago and that he had taught so many students over the years as an educator. Dr. Colville Young's doctoral thesis and dissertation was done on the cultural and linguistic aspects of the Belizean Kriole language. There are many that have said that Kriole is only a dialect but it appears that Doc's academic work in Caribbean linguistics had put that to rest that Kriole is actually a language. During my college education here in the United states, his famous book on Belizean Kriole proverbs was used frequently in my broadcast journalism and communication studies classes. At one time, one American professor liked it so much that he borrowed my one and only copy that he never returned. But Belizean students of language, communication studies and history are encouraged to find Dr. Colville Young's doctoral dissertation on the metathesis of Belizean Kriole and study it. It will perhaps reawaken again that spark in Belizean history that has gone missing for so long now. As he walked among some of the most dynamic African-American cultural and political dignitaries at the Leimert Park cultural and entertainment venue here on this memorable photo at the 2019 Belize Caye Fest in the Crenshaw District in South Central Los Angeles, it is obvious that the man that wrote the acclaimed Belizean song, "Birds Isle", is a Belizean man of prestige and dignity. Embraced by their respect and appreciation for him, it was a moment of pride for me to see "The Doctor" within an artistic domain that he had become a legend of as one of Belize's most accomplished and acclaimed Belizean artist extraordinaire and cultural icon.
