My friend Katy runs an AMAZING outdoor preschool program. Her outdoor days, where kids go off-site to the woods and forests and ponds, were inspired by her love for nature and adventure as well as her belief in children's freedom to play and explore their natural environment. She also has days where kids are at her home-based preschool, where kids explore the great activities and learning environment that Katy sets up for the kids. I love this article! When we offer false silver linings and are not straightforward with children, they receive the subtle message that we don't think they can ...handle the truth or handle their feelings. Our words and messages need to match the situation as much as is appropriate for the ages of the children. They will know when we are misleading because they are very attuned to what is happening. Show them that you're handling this, make sure they know the burden does not fall on them, model your trustworthiness in situations that seem meaningless because these are the moments that will accumulate to inform how they perceive larger themes in life. Yes there are caveats, but there are many more powerful implications. Even learning apps - don’t fool yourself into thinking that this type of learning is anything more than two dimensional. Play allows children to learn within the context of the real world, giving meaning and wholeness to their experience. Free, uninterrupted play is CRITICAL.
