About 6 years ago I was debugging an issue I was having with a broken link. It is then that I became familiar with the smart quote vs the standard quote. I was unable to figure out that issue 6 years ago on my own . Luckily I was working with someone who had encountered the issue before and he shared his knowledge with me. Today, 6 years later, I was once again confronted with the issue of the smart quote. While attempting to correct image links for a development site ...clone, I ran this simple query in MySQL: UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content=(REPLACE (post_content, ‘website.com’, ’test.website.com’)); I received an error informing me that database website.com could not be found. I then remembered the issues with smart quotes so I replaced ‘website.com’, ’test.website.com’ with 'website.com', 'test.website.com' See the slight difference in the quote marks? That's all it was. It's absolutely essential to have a staging site for your website. It's only a matter of time before you make a change to your live site that will cause the site to crash.
