Locknuts come in two main types--Prevailing Torque and Free Spinning. Prevailing Torque has to be turned on with a wrench. Stops where you leave it and doesn't need to be against a surface, but it has to be torqued all the way off. With a Free Spinning, it goes on easily. Holds from exerting pressure against a surface and removal is easy once locking torque is released.... The markings can be numbered, letters, slashes, dots, or an assortment of other markings.
