Two days ago an epic fire raged at Pier 45, the heart of Bay’s commercial fishing community. This is a community that performs the ancient work of wrestling food from the wildest place on earth. It’s dangerous, risky, extremely difficult work, and it’s carried out by those who wake in the dark and leave all comforts behind to battle the wind and waves, performing skilled and challenging labor before steaming home in the dark. And then doing it again. And again. This fire to...ok the essential tools necessary for the fleet to do this incredibly difficult job. It took crab pots and black cod pots, it took salmon gear and nets and buoys and hydraulic systems and engine parts. It took the implements of the family trades away from the fishing families that count on them to feed both your family and theirs. The only constant is change. After a month of trolling, we are totally switched over to live bait and the School of Fish is seeing a major shift in fishing as we drift with anchovies and the halibut start snapping. We’re seeing tripple hook ups and are getting plenty of exercise bringing fish after fish to the boat. When we hit 20 fish yesterday the kids we legitimately impressed.
