We are thrilled to welcome Arie van Gemeren to our Board! I am REALLY excited to announce that I’ve joined the Board of Directors for Bay Scholars. I am so impressed by Clint Reilly's story and his generous spirit, and by the awesome Bay Scholar’s team - comprised of Caitlin Kavanagh & Lars Lund. As a proud De La Salle alumni, I have seen firsthand the impact that a great Catholic education can have on young men and women. I have always thought the best way to live out o...ne's faith is to be a servant to others, and Bay Scholars’ is really walking the talk. Bay Scholars has done incredible work in helping deserving, hard-working teenagers from underserved communities get access to some of the Bay Area’s finest Catholic high schools. I am inspired to achieve partnerships with more schools, to help more young men and women, and to advance the mission of providing a quality college-preparatory education grounded in faith for all who want it. . . . #bayscholars #boardofdirectors #bayscholarsboard #bayscholarsteam #educationalequity #sfbayarea #catholiceducation #collegeprep #collegeprepschool

As we honor Martín Luther King, Jr. today and work toward his dream every single day, let’s raise up the voices of a few of our Bay Scholars whose reflections about the last year are thoughtful reminders that we have a lot of work to do while we rely on hope, faith, and love to carry us through.

Repost from @nobhillgazette about @tonythurmondspi, our special guest at this year’s Giving Thanks by Giving Back Virtual Event. . . . Tony Thurmond has a big job. Elected California’s state superintendent of public instruction in 2018, Thurmond is responsible for one of the largest public school systems in the country, with more than 6 million students and 10,000 schools. And he is serving in the middle of a pandemic in which teaching and learning have been turned upside down. If anyone is up for the challenge it’s Thurmond, who makes a habit of beating the odds. Janet Reilly caught up with him at the annual @bayscholars luncheon in November, where she found his passion for the transformative power of education infectious. Read their full conversation at the link in our bio. @razlatif

Meet the Team Lars Lund is the Advancement Director of Bay Scholars. He brings 35 years of school organization and leadership, curriculum and program management, strategic planning, fundraising and donor engagement, and board development experience to the program. A proud product of Catholic schools, Lund began his career as a teacher @serrapadres in 1983. In 1999 he began a three-year stint as an associate superintendent in the Catholic Schools Office in the @archdioce...sesf. He returned to Serra in 2002 as the school’s principal, and later as its president. During his time as an administrator, he implemented a plan for continuous school improvement, tripled the size of the school’s endowment, increased annual and capital fundraising results, oversaw $43 million in new construction and campus renovations, and created the Fund-a-Dream program, which to date has raised $5 million in financial aid support for students from underserved communities. His mission now is to engage and encourage support from a wider network of donors who can help Bay Scholars expand its geographic reach and support even more students. We are beyond grateful that he’s a part of our team. AND he has now joined us on Instagram (this is a big deal!), so head on over to his profile, hit the follow button, and welcome him to the party: @larslund_!
