Attended the formal hearing about California’s new Organics law - SB1383. Many public comments from Waste Haulers such as Waste Management to local public agencies such as StopWaste.Org all weighing in on the impacts of SB1383. What was interesting was the desire for changes in how we process organic waste. Not everyone feels the best use is compost, and even some of the compost processors shared concerns over quality and sufficient outlets. We are seeing challenge...s first ha d today with not having proper outlets for the recovered material - such as issues with the China Sword and no India limiting plastics. The law is aimed to reduce organic waste from our landfills, among other things. We are interested in understanding how this new law impacts our customers at the curb. This will likely mean a few things to consider: 1. Stiffer requirements to ensuring little to no contamination in your organics/greenwaste bins 2. Smaller solid waste containers, assuming we all do our part to source separate correctly 3. More support and resources will be needed to ensure multifamily understand what goes into the green bins. When we started this business, we would tell prospective customers what we offer, and constantly the conversation would start with, That’s what you do? followed by People pay for that? ... three years later, we are still in business, growing, and kept 99% of our customers. . Over the time, we’ve learned two distinct things about our service business: 1. People pay for services that they do not want to do (me...aning their time is going to be more effective spent elsewhere). 2. People will pay for services they are on unable to do (meaning they do not have the equipment or resources). We fall under a little bit of both here. These pictures represents overflowing dumpsters that are contaminated with recyclables, very heavy, deep in the lower garage level. After on site sorting to ensure their recycle bins are compliant, then reducing the overflow to avoid those hefty fees, we do an on-site sweep up. This is the part where most people would rather pay a service provider. The next is how do you move these two dumpsters weighing over 2,000 lbs each - this is where they pay us for something they are on able to do. The big takeaway for us, is any of our customers can decide it’s time to do it themselves.
