BUSD Board of Trustees Area 5 Appointment Barstow Unified School District appoints Area 5 Trustee BARSTOW, CA - At the January 7, 2021 Special Board Meeting, the Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) Board of Trustees voted on and appointed Michael Watson for the vacant Trustee seat in Area 5. This brings the current number of Board Members to 5. Personally, I am excited to welcome Mr. Watson. His youth will be a breath of fresh air. Our Board is deep with experience to kee...p the district on a good path, and a set of fresh eyes and new ideas is more than welcome. said Board Vice President, Kris Okamuro. Mr. Watson has deep connections to Barstow and currently works for his family owned business, Hi Desert Alarm. Due to the resignation of Area 5 Trustee Barbara Rose on December 7, 2020, the Barstow Unified School District Board of Trustees elected to appoint a new member to the Board through an application process. The applications were available on-line and due to the Superintendent’s office by 11:59 p.m. 12/22/2020 and interviews were held at the Special Board Meeting on 01/07/2021. Unless a petition calling for a special election, containing a sufficient number of signatures, is filed in the office of San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, it shall become an effective appointment. To reach that goal, our Barstow Unified School District is committed to: Nondiscrimination in discipline consistent with state and federal law and our district’s Board approved policies acknowledging the rights of all students and parents to appeal unfair discipl...inary practices, and effective training for all staff in culturally responsive Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and restorative justice principles, practices, and values. Working with students who exhibit behavior issues to ensure that students remain engaged in school through elimination of exclusionary practices and implementation of supportive Social-Emotional Learning and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, including academic supports that builds strong, authentic relationships between students and staff and foster teacher confidence and student understanding and achievement.
