Make gravy, not clogs! Top 5 Plumbing Tips to Keep Your Holidays Clog-Free Are you hosting a Thanksgiving meal with family and friends? You are probably planning the meal, shopping for food and cleaning the house. The last thing you plan for or want to deal with is a plumbing problem. They always seem to happen at the holidays. Follow these simple plumbing tips so you can enjoy your Thanksgiving without any plumbing surprises: 1) Never pour grease, oil or fat down the drain.... Does your holiday meal include turkey and other foods that produce grease? Think twice before you wash the griddle or pan in the sink. The grease will harden and clog up your pipes. Instead, you should wait till the griddle or frying pans cools down and then clean it off with paper towels before cleaning it. 2) Don’t throw stringy vegetables or vegetable peels into the garbage disposal. Stringy vegetables (like celery) and vegetable peels from potatoes and carrots for your holiday meals can easily get wrapped around your garbage disposal blades. This makes it hard for the motor to rotate and can lead to a tough clog. Expandable foods like rice and pasta when mixed with water will expand in your pipes and can cause a clog. Avoid coffee grinds as well. Even though the disposal can handle the coffee grinds your pipes do not fare so well. 3) Watch out for unflushables. Never flush anything down your toilet other than toilet paper and human waste. This goes for items like cotton balls, facial scrub pads, cotton swabs and even facial tissue. The worst offenders are flushable wipes and feminine protection products. Not only do these not dissolve, but some of them expand in water, which will clog up your plumbing. 4) Never dump all your scraps into the garbage disposal at once and then turn it on. Even though it sounds menacing when you turn it on, your garbage disposal should not be used for large amounts of food scraps. To avoid clogs, dump scraps in the garbage and scrape plates before placing them in the sink. Keep your garbage disposal on and the water running when you put food through it. This will make it easier for it to slice up all the food. If you follow these instructions and still hear a humming or clicking sound coming from your garbage disposal, there is a good chance it simply needs to be reset by pressing the button on the bottom of the unit. 5) Cover your shower drains with a drain screen. A drain screen helps filter out things like large clumps of soap or hair that can get into your pipes and clog them up. If you don’t have a drain screen, and you’re already having pipe problems before guests arrive, make sure to call a good plumber to come fix it.
