Better Breakfast Awareness Month meets Self Care Month. I'm usually all about protein in the morning if I eat breakfast at all. Hubby loves pancakes, waffles, and ESPECIALLY French toast. This morning, he asked for French toast and we actually had all the ingredients - bread is not one of our everyday staples. I made French toast for the first time in years and we treated ourselves to a rare morning sit-down breakfast. That hour spent sipping coffee, nibbling sweet/savory c...ustard-soaked multigrain bread, and enjoying each other's company was a little slice of heaven before the work day. Was it the best possible nutrition choice? Nope. Was it great for our souls? You betcha! Breakfast meets self-care in a delicious way. #selfcareawarenessmonth #betterbreakfastawarenessmonth #selfcare #foodismedicine #quarantinecuisine #acupuncture #traditionalchinesemedicine #balboaparkholisticwellnesscenter

It's National Self Care Awareness Month. If you considered self care a necessity rather than a luxury or privilege, how would your life be different? And what does self-care mean to you? For me, self care means that my physical, emotional,, and spiritual needs are cared for. It's eating a healthy diet of whole foods, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and making sure there is time to do the things which feed my soul - like cooking a great meal, ta...king a leisurely bike ride, and quality time with my Hubby and cat. It's also disconnecting from social media and choosing not to engage when everyone else is going crazy. #selfcareawarenessmonth #selfcare #acupuncture #traditionalchinesemedicine #selflove #selfcareisntselfish #balboaparkholisticwellnesscenter

September is National Better Breskfast Month. Yup, it's a thing! I've been dabbling with intermittent fasting, so I don't eat breakfast every day. But when I do, I want something hearty with ALL the macronutrients and lots of micronutrients. Avocado toast is about perfect with a slice of multigrain bread for healthy whole grain/high fiber carbs, avocado for good fat and lots of potassium, a pastured egg for protein and some vitamin D, and a handful of spinach or arugula or w...atercress for a burst of greens. I love to add a slice or two of preserved lemon (salty, citrusy, and a bit spicy) and a sprinkle of sesame seeds (extra magnesium and calcium, great for bone health) as well, so all 5 flavors (salty, bitter, sweet, spicy, sour) are represented. This month, I'll share my other favorite breakfasts to give you some ideas for your own morning treats! #foodismedicine #nationalbetterbreakfastmonth #acupuncture #traditionalchinesemedicine #kitchenmedicine #fiveflavors #balboaparkholisticwellnesscenter

Got this in an an email from a patient this afternoon, and it made my week Several weeks ago she canceled an appointment for herself because her husband had tested positive for COVID and she was in quarantine. Telemedicine is a great way to assess a patient's needs and come up with herbs and an acupressure plan, so I asked if I could help, and we got on a call. Yes, I can do this for ANYONE who is feeling sick and shouldn't come into the clinic! It's best if I can see thei...r face and tongue, but even a good chat can give me enough information to make herb, supplement, diet, acupressure, and movement recommendations which can help many situations which don't need emergency care. She stopped by the clinic and picked up the recommended herbs with touchless delivery and payment so nobody was exposed. Within a day of starting the herbs, his fever was gone and his appetite was back. I'm happy to say he has recovered and she has stayed healthy! Big yay for Chinese medicine! THIS is why I love what I do. Having the opportunity to help my patients and their families stay healthy and providing support when illness or injury comes makes me so happy. Whether in person, on the phone, or through a webcam, I'm here for you! #telemedicine #chineseherbalmedicine #acupuncture #covid19sucks #balboaparkholisticwellnesscenter #patientsarefamily

Summer is time for salads! This one has baby lettuce, arugula, radish, fennel bulb, cucumber, shishito peppers, and nectarines, with a drizxle of balsamic vinegar.. I made a crunchy topping of caramelized pistachios, almonds, nibs, and fennel seed with a nice pinch of sea salt. Fennel seed warms and stimulates digestion and balances the cold raw nature of a salad. Chinese medicine cautions about eating too much cold, raw food, even in summer so I'm always careful to put some...thing warming in my salads - fennel seed, black pepper, oregano, fresh ginger or garlic can all be worked into a simple dressing to balance the chill. And always serve at room temp rather that straight from the fridge. We also talk about balancing 5 flavors (salty, bitter, sour, sweet, spicy) and 5 colors (red, green, orange, white, black/dark purple) for a balanced diet. This salad has all 5 flavors (salt in the topper, balsamic = sour, nectarine and cucumber = sweet, peppers and radish = spicy, arugula = bitter) and all 5 colors (radish = red, nectarine = orange, cucumber/fennel bulb = white, nibs = black, lettuce/arugula =green). And it even hits all the macronutrients of allopathic nutrition - complex carbs in the greens, protein and good fat in the nuts and nibs. THIS is dietary balance. Bonus: it's DELICIOUS! #foodismedicine #traditionalchinesemedicine #nutrition #summersalads #balboaparkholisticwellnesscenter
