Please be advised the Pershing St. entrance will be closed for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon this Sunday 3/24 and you'll have to use the 28th St. entrance. Also, the course will be closed completely from April 1 to 5 for aerification maintenance as well as repaving of both parking lots.

Our first major tournament of 2019, President's Cup goes overtime to crown champion! It wasn't a fair fight. This weekend anyone who dared to step up and challenged this grand 100 year old beauty got cut down at the knees. Call it the Saint Patrick's Day Massacre. All those bright green shirts that players sported to celebrate the holiday turned red as Balboa's treacherous track extacted it's "pound of flesh". Slow thin fairways, firm fast greens, and some punishing rough... had scores soaring as the golf course was the true winner. The only thing harder than playing this brute of a course is writing this article with a two day hangover. The tournament did bring drama as Mike Henn took the early overall lead with a first round 68 net. One shot back was Charlie Chance at 69 and Dustin Martin was in the mix with a 72. Lots of guys hanging around with net 73 and 74 giving them hope for a day two charge. Day two got interesting after Dr. Danny Govenar posted an early 149 net to become the leader in the clubhouse. Groups kept finishing and a unbelieving Govenar was still the top dog with just the last two group on the course. His bubble was soon burst as Mike McHugh putted out and carded a 147 total. So could the day one leaders pull off the victory? Dustin Martin, it was a swing and a miss (he's a pro baseball player, get it). Danny Allen who spends more time running the Pro Shop than playing came up a little short. First round leader Mike Henn, well it just didn't happen. So that left Charlie Chance with a 6 foot hard breaking par putt for the tie. Good stroke, just enough speed and he was in at 147, tied with McHugh for the championship. GENTLEMEN WE HAVE A PLAYOFF! Back to the first hole and Chance gets a handicap stroke since this is a NET Championship. McHugh pulls it left and is buried in US Open style rough. Chance goes right, ending up by the cart path but does have a small window. McHugh chops out his 2nd into even deeper rough short of the green while Chance is left in the big weeds on the edge of the hazard. A couple of more chops and both balls are on the green. Chance putts first and just misses on the high side. Now the stage is set for McHugh who needs his seven footer for the win. Sweat dripping from his brow, hitches his pants, pulls on the brim of his cap, relines the balls. Ok, none of that happened. He just stepped up, drained it, and became this year President's Cup Champion. This is Mike's third major win as he already holds a Balboa Club Championship and Senior Championship. It's also the first time in seven years that the President Cup has been won by a player in the first flight. Lots of money in play this weekend with flight money, pin dollars, and low net day payouts. The winnings went deep in each flight and with all the ways to win 32 of the 58 players entered took home some cash. Congratulations, Mike McHugh!
