Craig Ludwig began wearing these shin pads at the University of North Dakota in 1979 and kept wearing them until he retired from the NHL in 1999. "Those pads we...re given to me on the first day of training camp at the University of North Dakota," Ludwig said. "There was nothing special about them. I just hate new things." The pads were handed to Ludwig at the beginning of his freshman year in 1979. "They were old then," Ludwig said. "Freshmen didn't get new equipment." "I was accused of making them bigger when I fixed them, but over the course of time, they got hit and would crack. "Duct tape," Ludwig said was the reason his pads survived for so long. "That is absolutely all there is. Every once in a while we have to put a piece of plastic over the top, rivet it on. You know they are probably 85 percent duct tape but they have been holding up. That duct tape has held a couple of my trucks together, so I figure it would be pretty good for these things too." The Hockey Hall of Fame came calling for the shin pads after Ludwig retired from the game in 1999. "I said, 'I'll make you a deal. You take me, you can take the pads,' " Ludwig said. "They never called me back."

It got really bad at times, but I'm still kicking. From what I've heard around the league, no-one has had it the way I have. My oxygen levels had fallen badly and doing anything at all resulted in immediate exhaustion. After a couple of days, the symptoms eased and I thought I was getting over it, but soon enough I was having more chest pains and other symptoms. At times I was in a very disturbing state. When I had chest pains and I walked up a flight of stairs, it felt like my heart would split. A couple of times when I went to sleep, I wasn't at all sure whether I'd wake up in the morning. I'd just hope this wouldn't be it for me.... Right now I spend most of my time asleep. I go to bed at 8pm. After 12 hours of sleep, I feel like I've slept for 5 minutes. During the day I go to the practice facility to exercise a bit, then come back home to sleep. It's not the ideal situation but there's nothing I can do.
